Sierra Plays VC and Pyramid Lake in Friday/Saturday Games

Sierra Lutheran had some fantastic games this weekend. JV girls and boys and varsity girls won their games. Varsity boys were less fortunate, but still played with great enthusiasm and sportsmanship.

Friday night the teams played Virginia City, with the exception of the JV girls, as VC did not have a team. JV boys started with a great lead that night, lost it a little at half time, but then caught up scoring 12 points the third quarter. The JV boys scored 12 more points in the 4th quarter and celebrated the score of 42-34. Kyman Berger had 12 points, 7 rebounds, 2 offensively and 5 defensively, 1 assist, and 1 steal. Thomas Mellum had 11 points, 5 assists and 3 steals. Logan Schinzing had 2 offensive rebounds and 4 steals. Steven Flanagan had 9 points, 1 assist, and 3 steals.

Sierra varsity girls played a fast game, starting out with lots of speed and control. By half time, the ladies doubled their score from the first half, going from 10-6 to 20-10. Staying in the lead, the game ended 39-24. Kirsten Iverson had 12 points, 1 steal, and 1 assist. Brynna Hansen had 9 points, 4 rebounds, 3 offensively and 1 defensively, 1 steal, and 1 assist. On Saturday, all the teams traveled to Pyramid Lake. The JV girls’ game had a short delay, as Pyramid Lake was waiting for players. After that mishap, the game commenced quickly and Sierra’s girls started nicely with a score of 10-4 first quarter. After that, it was a fast game, and Sierra slipped into a greater lead each quarter, the closing score being 37-10.

JV boys played a somewhat similar game, going from a 1 point lead in the first quarter to a 5 point lead at half time. The 3rd and 4th quarter is when the team really just exploded with energy, scoring 13 points in each one. The final score came to 46-35.

Sierra’s varsity girls continued their streak of luck, now 9-2 in league, placing them in second place with Smith Valley. After playing Pyramid previously, they strategized and created a great defense. With that strategy, the Lady Falcons found a lead and kept it the whole game, winning 26-17. Kirsten Iverson had 13 points, 3 rebounds, 1 offensively and 2 defensively, 3 steals, and 1 assist. Grace Bonafede had 6 points, 12 rebounds, 8 offensively and 4 defensively, and 3 steals. Brynna Hansen had 2 points, 6 rebounds, 5 offensively and 1 defensively, and 4 steals.

With the Pyramid Lake varsity boys’ team in second place in league standings, Sierra tried their best. They had a good start 1st quarter, 13-12. But when half time rolled around, Pyramid Lake had swept up 22 more points. Struggling to keep up, the Falcons did what they could with what they had. In the end, the final score was 32-58. Overall, it was a great game offensively, with almost all Sierra players scoring at least once. Jake Cummings had 4 points and 4 defensive rebounds. Zane Warkentin had 10 points and 3 defensive rebounds. Nathan Waite had 3 steals and 3 points.

They pretty much kept to themselves until a gregarious gentleman came along with something to eat that he passed out to one after another until they were all up and around on the riverbank, bargaining and trading with what little they had to offer. This was quite possibly their main meal for the day, and they were exhibiting great gladness in celebrating it.
