Carson City's Ideas On Tap highlights Black History Month topics at Feb. 9 discussion
Ideas On Tap February's topic of discussion will highlight Black History Month honoring the triumphs and struggles of African Americans throughout U.S. History, including the civil rights movement and their artistic cultural and political achievements.
The theme for this years' Black History Month is "Black Health and Wellness." We're excited to have two dynamic speakers joining us on Wednesday, Feb. 9th at the Adams Hub for Innovation commencing at 6 pm. Dr. Bayo Curry-Winchell, M.D. a practicing physician at Saint Mary's Hospital along with Dr. Jody Lykes, Ph.D. Coordinator of African Diaspora Program at the University of Nevada-Reno.
Another highlight of the program is the opportunity to sample tasty soul food delicacies prepared and brought by attendees. For those who plan to bring a dish please make sure you have your recipe on a 3x5 index card to share with others. Your dish must be in a covered container we also encourage you to bring your cooked prepared dish in a crockpot or warmer to keep the food warm, sampling time will be 7:15 pm.
To all those wonderful cooks, this is your opportunity to showcase your wonderful soul food cooking skills e.g., fried chicken, catfish, macaroni and cheese, Hoppin john, smothered chicken, or pork chops, turkey wings, okra, black eyed peas, turnip and or collard greens, candied yams, pinto beans, cornbread, cabbage, peach cobbler, coconut cake, pecan pie and sweet potato pie just to name a few.
Small plates, and plastic cutlery will be provided. We're also asking the citizenry who attends to bring canned goods, and other non-perishables to donate to the Carson City local food bank. We encourage those who RSVP by or before Monday, February 7th, by 5 pm to please wear a combination of red, black or green to represent the colors of Africa. Ideas on Tap is a monthly series of humanities-based community discussions about important contemporary issues. Each program includes a panel discussion featuring knowledgeable participants who present a wide spectrum on the topic, as well as a chance for audience members to share their thoughts and responses. Future topics include March 9 taxes; April 13, technology; May 11, fitness and June 8, finances.
