Outdoors with Don Q: What you need to know about ice fishing

With the bitter January cold weather in the Sierra behind us, we do have plenty of water frozen on our creeks, streams, rivers, ponds, lakes and reservoirs. And that ice covering provides an excellent opportunity to catch fish.
Ice fishing is a unique sport that requires a whole different set of fishing techniques, gear and clothing, as opposed to lazy fishing on a warm, drowsy day in the middle of the summer. So, if you’ve never tried fishing through the ice, here’s some information that should be more than enough to get you “hooked” on this winter sport:

Seven-year-old Grass Valley girl lands a 10.5 pound brown trout on Lake Tahoe

Seven-year-old Brooke Kennedy from Grass Valley, and her grandparents Captain Rick and Tresa Kennedy of Tight Lines Guide Service, fished Lake Tahoe on Jan. 22, 2013.

We decided to go to Lake Tahoe for the day to get the boat inspected and pre fish for some upcoming trips.
We took our granddaughter, Brooke with us. After the inspection was complete we launched at Cave Rock and immediately started fishing.

Outdoors with Don Q: Two interesting days at a sport show

Elaine and I spent last Friday and Saturday manning an exhibit at the ninth annual Grand Slam Club OVIS Hunter and Outfitter Convention held at the Grand Sierra Hotel and Casino Hotel in Reno.

We were there to help Paul Dankowski, Game Warden and Operation Game Thief (OGT) Coordinator for the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW).

The two of us serve as State Directors on the OGT Citizen's Board, and had volunteered to man the OGT exhibit trailer for those two days.
