No clear plot in movie “Mulholland Dr.”
If you’re into movies that are entertaining even if not exactly simple and straight simple plot, “Mulholland Dr.” might be just right for you. It stars Laura Herring (not exactly big name) and Naomi Watts. Watts is Betty, new to LA and looking to take on the movie business. Herring is the survivor of a car crash on Mulholland Drive and wanders into Betty’s life.
The pair embark on a mixed up journey attempting to find out who Herring (Rita, temporarily) is and what happened in the accident.
Betty is naive and eager, Rite mysterious. But they find a common ground (or I should say bed) where they explore love. (This could be a stopper if you are offended by nudity.) They search for a woman whose name strikes a chord in Rita, but she seems dead in an apartment. Betty auditions for a film role and Rita wanders off.
Then Betty is taken to a party where Rita is close to the film director who sort of holds things together; Rita and the director are cozy, puzzling Betty (Watts offers the same kind of innocence that she showed in her dance scene for King Kong in that film; she’s good at it.)
These are just a few of the elements of the movie, not that they add up to a reasonable plot that makes any kind of sense. Director David Lynch made the movie as a pilot for a TV series that never got made; he then patched it together, sort of, into a finished if not understandable film. Does not matter; it’s fun and Watts is fine. This is rated R (Oddly enough!) And runs two hours and 27 minutes and was released in 2001. Netflix had it.
