Today and Tuesday, Elizabeth Martinez, director of Nutrition Services for the Carson City School District will participate in the School Nutrition Association’s 51st annual Legislative Action Conference in Washington, D.C.

During the conference, Martinez will join 800 school nutrition professionals from across the country in urging Congress to permanently increase federal funds for school meals, allow all schools to offer free school meals to all students as they did during the pandemic and maintain current school nutrition standards.

Bidders were reviewed based on rates per month, experience, transfer station proposals, and implementation plans to complete the project. The motion to award the Lyon County Solid Waste Disposal Franchise was made by Commissioner Jacobson, seconded by Commissioner Hendrix and approved by a 3-2 vote.

The National Weather Service has issued a Snow Squall Warning until 5:45 Saturday evening, and advises drivers to slow down or delay travel entirely until the squall has passed.

What is a squall exactly? According to the NWS, snow squalls are intense periods of moderate to heavy snowfall accompanied by surface winds which create whiteout conditions.

Similar to a dust storm, snow squalls are usually short in duration and can be tracked by radar across a region or area.

At 4:12 p.m. a crash was reported on Highway 50 east of Golf Club Drive in Carson City.

Motorists should use caution while in the area.

In a brief respite from the back to back winter storms the Sierra region is experiencing, vino enthusiasts used the opportunity to walk the downtown for the March wine walk.
