The Eagle Valley Middle School Science Olympiad team won 1st place at regional competition held at University of Nevada Reno on Saturday, Feb. 8 against several teams from the Northern Nevada area.

Competition at the middle school level is opened to grades 6-9. Coached by EVMS science teacher, Josh Billings, the team is composed of EVMS 6th-8th graders and a freshman from CHS.

The Nevada Firearms Coalition is creating a political action committee to try to defeat candidates who support gun background checks and tax increases on ammunition.

A Carson City man was arrested Friday on suspicion of felony child abuse. Terry Ray Kilfian was arrested in the 2200 block of Roop Street at 12:19 p.m.

According to the arrest report, Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies met with the 12-year-old victim who claimed his father punched him in the face, then kicked him on the side in his ribs. The child had visible injuries to his neck, face and ribcage, according to the arrest report.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has recovered stolen property and manufacturing equipment to make forged checks.

Charlsie Duffy, 25, of Gardnerville, was arrested for several crimes including forgery, possession of stolen property and burglary.

During a forged check investigation, Investigators learned Duffy had manufactured checks. A search warrant was issued for her residence on North Court in Gardnerville and numerous items of stolen property were also recovered from various local businesses. (See photos.)

The Carson High School Wrestling team has been one of the most successful sports in the long and prestigious history of Carson High School. Over the last six years they have won 30 consecutive league dual matches and six straight Sierra League titles. In 2012 the Senator wrestlers were crowned Northern Nevada’s NIAA Regional Champions and they are gunning for that distinction again this year.

A U.S. Senate Committee has passed a bill authorizing hundreds of millions of dollars for environmental projects at Lake Tahoe.

Carson City government finances are good, though not exceptional, Mayor Robert Crowell said Wednesday as he urged a boost in sales tax to do capital projects. In a State of the City speech at a Chamber of Commerce-sponsored breakfast, Crowell cited a $1.1 million bulge in ending balance last year, solid bond ratings and prospects for rising city revenues.

When the Nevada State Board of Wildlife Commissioners met recently in Las Vegas, its members tackled an agenda that included the establishment of big game hunting seasons for 2014 into 2015, including several “antlerless elk management” hunts that allow for combination deer and cow elk tags, combination bull elk and cow elk tags, spike elk hunts and Nevada’s fourth bear hunt.

A wet pattern is expected into the weekend as a series of storms lined up in the Pacific should make it to the Sierra, Lake Tahoe and western Nevada, according to the National Weather Service.

Nicole St. Pearre of Kissimmee, Fla., faces charges of obtaining money under false pretenses and fraudulent use of a credit card. The warrants were issued Sept. 18, 2013 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $20,000.
