CARSON CITY – A sign that Nevada may have finally hit bottom in the national recession emerged today when the Department of Taxation reported an increase in taxable sales in April – the first in 20 months.
Statewide taxable sales totaled $3.3 billion in April, up 2 percent over April of 2009. But for the 10 months of fiscal year 2010, taxable sales are down 11.9 percent over the same period in the prior fiscal year.

A fire chief, emergency manager; the sheriff; the coroner; a funeral director; the hospital security manager; a sheriff’s chief deputy and a captain, the health director and other health department officials met on Wednesday to assess the community’s ability to handle a critical incident causing numerous deaths.

Incidents resulting in fatalities that exceed the normal operating capacity of the Coroner’s Office are considered mass fatality and would trigger the activation of the Mass Fatality Management Plan.

A 76-year-old Indian Hills woman, who reportedly suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, is missing and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public for help in finding her. 
The woman, Ada Cordero, was reported missing by her daughter this Sunday afternoon and was last seen at 7:30 a.m. by her daughter, according to a press statement.

They looked like a chain gang.

Through syncopated rhythm, men young and old brought their down shovels and hoes onto the weeds, effectively cutting them off from existence. On the other side of the school grounds, women and children were picking up trash, repairing the track circle and supplying everyone with an unconditional amount of pizza and water.

This event was an Eagle Scout Project headed by David McMasters on June 22 to improve Fritsch Elementary School’s track and playground for generations to come.

CARSON CITY – Despite Nevada’s record high unemployment rate, the amount of money the state expects to borrow from the federal government to pay jobless benefits remains on target, a state official said this week.

Lane closures are expected to occur on Highway 395 between Clear Creek Avenue and Clearview Drive during the night hours of 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., June 29-30, due to work on the median.

As a result of the next phase of the Nevada Department of Transportation project on the freeway, Koontz Lane will be closed between Raglan Circle and Edmonds Drive until January 2011.

CARSON CITY – A one-stop shop for businesses to access Nevada state programs and services is moving forward with lawmaker approval Thursday of a contract to develop the first of its kind business portal in the secretary of state’s office.

CARSON CITY – Nevada is about to begin a new tax amnesty program in the hopes of bringing in several million dollars worth of uncollected revenue to help with a severe budget shortfall.
The amnesty program, which will run for three months beginning July 1, was approved by the Legislature in a special session in February as a way to help close an $800 million gap in the general fund budget.

CARSON CITY – A panel of lawmakers today approved a $20,000 appropriation to commission an official portrait of out-going Gov. Jim Gibbons.
The request by the Department of Cultural Affairs for the funding from the Interim Finance Committee’s contingency fund was approved without comment by lawmakers.
The request was submitted after Gibbons lost his re-election bid in the June primary to GOP challenger Brian Sandoval. Gibbons will leave office as the state’s 28th governor in early January. A new governor will be picked by voters in November.

An Amber alert has been issued this morning. Kimberly Brune abducted both of her children from their father's home in Carson City.

At the time of the abduction she was driving a white 2004 Toyota Rav 4 with Nevada license plate 653 PZF. The vehicle has numerous rear window stickers. The incident happened at 6:54 a.m.

Brune is 43 years old, 5'7, 140 pounds with blonde hair and blue eyes.
The children, both boys, are described as age 7, 4'7, 47 pounds and and a 5-year-old, 4'2, 43 pounds.

Two motorcycle accidents involving vehicles have happened tonight within the past two hours in Carson City, sending two to the hospital by helicopter ambulance.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal is reporting that the State Prison board has delayed a decision on whether to close the Carson City prison. The board will take up the matter again on July 13, the Review-Journal reports.

CARSON CITY – Nevada state Treasurer candidate Steve Martin is questioning the method Treasurer Kate Marshall is using to account for the loss of interest income from a failed $50 million investment with the now bankrupt Lehman Brothers.
Martin is also questioning whether Marshall has the authority to write off the interest loss to agencies and programs over a period of four and a half years.

An alcohol compliance check in the capital city on Monday led to seven businesses that failed to comply with the law concerning sales, the Carson City Sheriff's Office is reporting.

Those businesses were: Ormsby Club Bar at 600 S. Curry St., Dotty's Casino at 3771 South Carson St., Chevron at 1102 North Carson Street, Rand Convenience Story at 1800 Highway 50 East, AM/PM Arco at 4190 South Carson St., and Casino Fandango at 3800 South Carson St., and Bodines at 5650 South Carson St.

CARSON CITY – The Republican Assembly Caucus has launched a media suite to keep Nevadans engaged and informed about lawmaker activities as the general election campaign season gets under way.

A Carson City man faces felony burglary and possession of stolen property charges after allegedly taking an office computer scanner disc from the Carson City Parks and Recreation Department office at 851 East William Street on Sunday.
Timothy Souza Whitmer, 18, confessed to the burglary on Monday, according to the Carson City Sheriff's Office arrest report. He is being held on $25,000 bail. A second person in the burglary has not been identified, according to the arrest report.
