CARSON CITY – A group called Nevadans United for Fair Mining Taxes filed a constitutional amendment initiative today with the Nevada Secretary of State’s office that would allow the cap on mining taxes to increase from 5 percent to 9 percent.

“This initiative is not a tax increase,” said Las Vegas businessman Monte Miller, who heads up the group. “It simply raises the cap on mining taxes and leaves the issue on whether to raise the tax in the hands of the Nevada Legislature and governor.”

Carson City Sheriff's deputies arrested Cody Thompson, 20, an unemployed Carson City man, at 9 a.m. Monday near the intersection of Northridge Drive and Table Rock Drive. Thompson was arrested for the felonies of possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of a controlled substance, a gross misdemeanor of possession of a dangerous weapon, and misdemeanors of possession of a hypodermic device, possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to maintain a single lane, violation of a suspended sentence, and not having a valid drivers' license. Bail is set at $35,150 plus administrative fees.

CARSON CITY – As Gov. Brian Sandoval and the Board of Education move ahead with the selection of a new state schools chief to push forward with education reform, a new report gives another reason for urgency: Nevada has received a D grade for its science standards from a national group.

The thriller "Man on a Ledge," running in Carson City a the Fandango Galaxy movie house, is a neat little thriller with a solid cast headed by Sam Worthington as jailbird Nick Cassidy and Elisabeth Banks as cop Lydia Mercer.

Movie opens with Nick checking into a New York hotel, having a meal with champagne before he goes out the window and stands on a ledge.

Flashback to Nick in Sing Sing prison for the heist of a giant jewel (he was framed). He escapes in a nice car chase after the funeral of his supposed father. He makes some plans and we get back to the man on the ledge.

But now the restaurant is doing something new that will likely shake things up in Carson City early in the morning. They are serving breakfast.

(press release) Dickey's Barbecue Pit franchise owner Farrokh Hormazdi will be opening his doors for business tomorrow, Tuesday January 31st. The first 100 people receive a free big barbecue pulled pork sandwich.

"I am extremely excited to open and begin serving authentic barbecue to our community," said Hormazdi.

The new 1,448 square foot store is located at 3250 Retail Drive, Suite 100. The hours of operation are from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

Due to a project to complete a new north-south water transmission line on the east side of Carson City, there will be utility work in the roundabout at Fairview Drive and E. Fifth Street on weekdays from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. There will be flagger controls and minor delays are expected.

There will be work at the following locations as a result of the Freeway Landscaping Project. No closures are expected, but traffic control will be in effect.
·College Parkway in the vicinity of the Freeway.
·US Highway 50 in the vicinity of the Freeway.

CARSON CITY – Nevada’s taxable sales rose 9.6 percent in November over the same month a year ago, driven in large part by car sales and improved business at bars and restaurants, the state Department of Taxation reported today. Taxable sales totaled nearly $3.4 billion for the month.

For the fiscal year that began July 1, 2011, taxable sales are up 8.5 percent through November.

Clark County sales were up 8.6 percent. Washoe County sales were up 5.3 percent.

CARSON CITY – Five finalists for Nevada’s top public education job were submitted today to the state Board of Education.

The names of three finalists will be forwarded to Gov. Brian Sandoval for his final selection after interviews are conducted by the Board of Education next month.

The five finalists, picked from 15 applicants who sought the position of state superintendent of public instruction, are:

The Office of the Nevada Attorney General will host eight trainings starting on Tuesday, Jan. 31 running through Thursday, Feb. 9 throughout the state about the Nevada victim notification service.

The goal of the trainings is to teach first responders, victims of crime, victim advocates, prosecutors, law enforcement agencies, and community members about a service currently available in 13 of Nevada’s 17 counties called Victim Information and Notification Everyday (VINE).

The Carson City Board of Supervisors will appoint new officers for the city's Redevelopment Authority at it meeting next Thursday.

Also on the agenda will be possible action to start fundraising and planning for a new animal shelter.

Carson City Sheriff's deputies arrested Josephina Rodriguez, 43, a Carson City woman, at just after 9 p.m. Tuesday at the 3800 block of South Carson Street. Rodriguez was arrested for felony burglary. She is alleged to have stolen ten items from the Carson City Kohls, where she was assigned to clean over a period of several months. She claimed were clothes for her grandson. Bail is set at $2,500.
