A Carson City man faces felony fraud charges after he was arrested for allegedly attempting to cash counterfeit checks at a casino on Wednesday.

Donald Paul Jackson Jr., 27, is being held in Carson City Jail on $27,500 bail. According the arrest report, officers were called to a casino in the 3800 block of Highway 50 East in reference to a suspicious subject attempting to cash counterfeit checks.

The Tahoe Douglas Bomb Squad detonated a live World War II-era hand grenade after a couple discovered the explosive device while going through a friend’s belongings at a Topaz Ranch Estates home on Thursday.

At approximately 7 p.m. the couple drove the hand grenade to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office in Minden to turn the device over to authorities, said Douglas County Sheriff's Office Captain John Milby in a news release.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports today that a seventh woman has accused a Carson City probation officer of using his authority and the threat of jail to coerce her into exposing herself for his personal gratification while he was on official duty, according to an amended 25-count criminal complaint filed in Carson City Justice Court. CARSON CITY — Bethany Drysdale, who has promoted Nevada's tourism attractions for more than five years for the Nevada Commission on Tourism will head the Public Relations department beginning April 23, Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki announced this week.

Drysdale has served as Public Relations specialist for NCOT since October 2005. She succeeds Chris Chrystal, who is retiring as manager April 22 after a 48-year career in news reporting and public relations that included 13 years with the Commission.

Elaine and I took a ride on Wednesday from Carson City to Kit Carson Pass (elevation 8,500'), via U.S. Highway 395, Nevada State Route 88 and California State Route 88, to get some pictures of the deep snow in the high country.

CARSON CITY – A hearing room was packed today with labor and business representatives for a legislative committee’s consideration of a package of bills aimed at curbing the misuse of independent contractors.

From a region with a crystal-blue famed lake to a state of 10,000 of them, non-stop daily service to Minneapolis, Minn., from Reno-Tahoe International Airport will begin July 1, airport officials announced today.

The Carson City Planning Commission meets tonight at 5 p.m. in the Sierra Room at the community center. On the agenda is allowing Silver State Charter School to move to a 6.6 acre parcel between Fairview and Mallory Way. Here is the rest of the agenda. You can also check out the live video.

Dear Editor: As a long time resident of the Comstock, I have watched with dismay the erosion of the Comstock Historic District that has occurred because of open pit mining.

One need only travel from Virginia City to Carson City to see what used to be historical landscapes transformed into a series of ugly pit mines. The Comstock Historic District is a cultural and historic resource set aside for the people of Nevada. Pit mining erodes this resource visually, and endangers historic landscapes and structures.

CARSON CITY – More of the state’s financial data would migrate online with a bill from Assemblyman Marcus Conklin, D-Las Vegas.
He would require the Controller’s office to post the state’s revenues and expenditures online with tables, graphs and explanatory descriptions for each account.

Featured speaker is Assemblyman Pete Livermore. Lunch may be ordered from 11:30 Am until noon. There will be a business meeting following our speaker where the plans for the May 14th Fashion Show and other activities will be discussed.

An unemployed Carson City man wanted on felony sexual assault and kidnapping charges was arrested at a motel room in the 200 block of West Caroline on Tuesday morning.

Brandon Hicks, 18, is being held on $200,000 bail. A warrant for his arrest was issued on March 25 in Carson City Justice Court on the alleged felony crimes of first degree kidnapping, battery with intent to commit sexual assault committed by strangulation and sexual assault.

This is a first reminder that if you're one of many tens of thousands of big game hunters interested in drawing a 2011 hunting tag for Pronghorn Antelope, Mule Deer, California Bighorn Sheep, Desert (Nelson) Bighorn Sheep, Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep, Rocky Mountain Elk and Rocky Mountain Goat in the State of Nevada, be advised that the final deadline for RECEIVING your application(s) is 5 p.m. on Monday, April 18.

The drawing results will be made available to the public by June 13.

Idaho Fish and Game will auction furs, hides, antlers, traps and miscellaneous hunting and fishing equipment on Saturday, April 2, at the Clearwater Regional office, 3316 16th St., in Lewiston.

Anyone interested may view the items beginning at 8 a.m., with the auction beginning promptly at 10 a.m.

Auction items include furs, whole carcasses, antlers, and skulls of elk, moose, deer, black bear, mountain lion, otter, beaver, bobcat and fox.

SUN VALLEY, NEVADA – When Sara Weatherford teaches at Sun Valley Elementary, she says frequent power outages and rattling pipes interrupt her lessons.
The 52-year-old school is a hodgepodge of a half dozen buildings erected intermittently over the past five decades. Noise bleeds through the walls between classrooms, making it difficult to concentrate, she says.

CARSON CITY – Despite citing the need to reform Nevada’s public employee pension plan, Gov. Brian Sandoval did not introduce a bill seeking changes to the retirement system by a deadline Monday.
Even so, Heidi Gansert, Sandoval’s chief of staff, said the administration will “be a part of the conversation” as other measures addressing potential reforms to the Public Employees’ Retirement System are considered in the 2011 legislative session.

A former student banned from the Western Nevada College campus has allegedly sent "disturbing" and "threatening" emails to WNC and Nevada System of Higher Education staff. The Carson City Sheriff's Office is investigating the matter.

A security alert was issued Monday on the WNC website. The former WNC student named in the alert is Eric Hodgdon. Online college records show there was a 2007 WNC graduate Eric Arthur Hodgdon.

State lawmakers are debating whether the minimum auto liability coverage Nevada drivers need to carry should be raised for the first time since 1954. Assemblyman William Horne (D-Dist. A34) says some Nevadans were driving Edsels and gas cost less than 50 cents a gallon the last time state lawmakers set the minimum rates for auto liability insurance. CARSON CITY – Overtime pay for working more than eight hours per day would disappear under a proposal from Sen. James Settelmeyer, R-Gardnerville.
While employers and chambers of commerce supported the bill, Settelmeyer said he brought Senate Bill 332 on behalf of employees.
