With Wednesday being Nov. 30, and with all of the crazy “Black Friday” shopping madness now safely behind us, we can begin, once again, to think rationally about ideas for Christmas gifts for that special person(s) in our lives.

UPDATED 8:35AM: California State Parks is investigating vandalism that happened over the weekend on Washoe Meadows State Park land near the Lake Tahoe Golf Course. Electronic equipment and river monitoring devices were damaged or destroyed. Two logs were found to have graffiti sprayed on them, saying "Stop Golf" and "Save the Park."

The Tahoe Resource Conservation District has released a series of educational posters which identify some of the biggest threats to Lake Tahoe Basin, as well as what visitors, residents and even kids can do to help. Titled “Tahoe’s Most un-Wanted,” the first three posters feature aquatic invasive species, fine sediments from runoff and invasive weeds, and are free to pick up or request for local schools, businesses and other organizations who would like to display them publicly.

Potential Democratic candidates for the Nevada Legislature are continuing their game of musical chairs.

First, Assemblywoman Dina Neal, D-North Las Vegas, announced in an email Friday that she had changed her mind and will not run for the soon-to-be vacant Senate District 4 seat now held by congressional candidate Steven Horsford.

Willa Ramsden will tell you that the past 100 years have been good to her.

And she celebrated that 100th birthday with friends Sunday at the Eagle Valley Nursing Home.

In a news release, the Tahoe Regional Planning agency announced changes to the two-day agenda of Governing Board meetings taking place on Wednesday, Dec. 14 at Granlibakken, and Thursday, Dec. 15 at the TRPA offices.

The Dec. 14 agenda remains unchanged and includes a proposed adoption of the Final Environmental Impact Review and Environmental Impact Statement for Homewood Mountain Resort on the west shore of Lake Tahoe.

Glory be, what's going on in Hollywood? First there was Scorsese's "Hugo," an excellent non-Christmas homage to a French motion picture innovator. Now there's "Arthur's Christmas," in 3D that actually uses that medium to enhance a fine animation updating of the Yule story. The motion picture "Hugo," now playing at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City, is a holiday movie that kids and adults can enjoy. It's Martin Scorsese's homage to film pioneer Georges Méliès, a French innovator who created much of the library of movie techniques back before World War I only to be forgotten amid the strife on combat in France. His films were largely destroyed to make such things as guitar picks.

This is the second in a series of photos of oddities that were seen on a six week vacation trip to Italy in September and October, 2011.

That is the date of the Ormsby Sportsmen’s Association (OSA) of Carson City big, end-of-the-year, annual banquet.

OSA is a local sportsmen’s club, which was founded way back in 1945; and with a 2011 paid-up membership of more than 220 members, it is one of the oldest and largest sportsmen’s group in the State of Nevada.

Even though it remains among the least expensive holiday meal, the retail cost of menu items for a classic Thanksgiving dinner including turkey, stuffing, cranberries, pumpkin pie and all the basic trimmings increased about 13 percent this year, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation.
The Bureau’s annual Thanksgiving dinner price survey shows the average cost of 2011′s feast for 10 is $49.20, a $5.73 price increase from 2010’s average of $43.47. The survey shopping list includes turkey, bread stuffing, sweet potatoes, rolls with butter, peas, cranberries, a relish tray of carrots and celery, pumpkin pie with whipped cream, and beverages of coffee and milk, all in quantities sufficient to serve a family of 10.

Keeping a promise made during the 2011 Nevada Legislature, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency has taken the first step toward giving local governments in the basin control over permitting and other rules.

%u201CTRPA's goal is to operate more on a regional scale where we can be most effective at protecting the Lake Tahoe environment and to shift some level of permit review responsibilities to local governments,%u201D said Executive Director Joanne Marchetta.

William Ravenelle was supposed to be celebrating his 50th birthday last Saturday here in Carson City. But he never came home after he was last seen at the Comfort Inn in Elko, and his family is desperately searching for him. Ravenell's brother Mike went to the motel and found the doors of William's car wide open, and his cell phone was still in his room. A motel employee reported that his wallet was found, and it still had money in it. William Ravenelle is 5 feet, 9 inches tall, 185 pounds, blue eyes and brown hair. $5 million of voter-approved funding will be going to help build a bike path around the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe, but many obstacles stand in the way of its completion. The narrow roadway going through the Carson City portion of the lake's shoreline is one of the problem area. The others include getting around Cave Rock.

Nevada Secretary of State Ross Miller is filing a protest over language that was included in the newly approved redistricting order. The language was added that allows candidates to use terms like "re-elect" an "incumbent" even if the redistricting has moved them to new districts, or their district numbers have changed.
