Open backyard burning in the Carson City limits has been canceled because of dry fire conditions, fire officials announced Thursday.
The Carson City Fire Department typically allows open backyard burning in spring and fall, however, the persistent drought in the region has played a role in several significant "off-season" wildland fires in the region.

By way of background, the “Quilici Cabin” is located in a rural area of Plumas County at an elevation of exactly 6,000 feet on a steep hillside between Portola and Davis Lake in Northern California; and it is jointly owned by Jim, Kathi, Don and Elaine Quilici, all of Carson City.

That two-story cabin was built back in 2003, and from our deck, you have a spectacular, world-class view of the surrounding groves of pine trees and quaking aspen trees plus the nearby and the faraway mountains.

RENO – Proof of Nevada’s importance in the outcome of the horse race that is the presidential election continued to be on display today, with President Obama visiting Las Vegas and GOP Vice Presidential candidate Paul Ryan making stops here and in Southern Nevada.

"Virginia City and its Archaeology: A Thirty Year Overview" will be presented Nov. 15 by State historic preservation officer Ron James. The presentation features a discussion, artifact viewing and signing of James' new book, "Virginia City: Secrets of a Western Past," published by University of Nebraska Press in conjunction with the Society of Historical Archaeology. The Carson Chamber Singers, a choral group of the Carson City Symphony Association, begins its 28th season with a concerts in Carson City on November 2 and in Reno on November 4. Director Michael Langham will conduct the Singers in works by René Clausen, Randall Thompson, Maurice Duruflé, and Louis Vierne. The Solemn Mass by Vierne, for chorus and organ, will be accompanied by Nancy Mielke. The Carson City concert will be Friday, Nov. 2, 7:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 306 W. Musser St. Admission is free, requested donation $10 at the door.

The Carson Valley Inn is serving a Free Spaghetti Lunch for all Veterans and Active Military – plus one guest – on Veteran's Day, Sunday, November 11. The event will be held in the Valley Ballroom from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Veterans and active military personnel simply present your military ID for entrance, and lunch for you and your guest is on the Carson Valley Inn! There will be a Veteran's Day colors presentation, the National Anthem and an invocation at 11 a.m.

A 23-year-old Dana Point, Calif. woman was arrested Halloween night in Carson City and faces misdemeanor charges of hit and run, reckless driving, marijuana possession and driving under the influence after she allegedly hit a pickup and took off at a high rate of speed through a residential area.

All cultures celebrate the dead as well as mourn them. And the first of November usually marks the Day of the Dead, also known as Dia de los Muertos. In Carson City there will be a multicultural celebration Saturday, November 10, to honor loved ones who have passed away with stories, crafts, songs and exhibits, colorful folklore dancers. The Day of the Dead, Dia de los Muertos event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Nevada State Museum.

Perhaps if Carson City wasn't so quick to give million-dollar tax breaks to move car dealerships down the street; and spend millions more on a tourist train the public doesn't even want, the city might not have to resort to divisive bond elections to fund basic services like libraries.

It's sad to see so many people unwilling to give something back to a community they claim to love. Unfortunately you're about as likely to get a good deal on a car from those grateful dealerships as the new V&T is to pay for itself.

With the official start to the Tahoe ski season just around the corner, the Tahoe Fund is launching the popular “Plates for Powder” promotion to drive sales of Lake Tahoe license plates.

In the 74 years since the Nevada Day Parade moved to Carson City, the number of Nevada Day events has multiplied to include contests, parties, carnivals, exhibits and food events. At the same time, the region from which participants come to celebrate in the capital city has diminished.
“It used to be a statewide event,” said Guy Rocha, retired state archivist who continues to stay involved with Nevada history and events. “Now, Nevada Day in Nevada is celebrated principally in Western Nevada.”

CARSON CITY – Assembly Republican caucus leader Pat Hickey said he expects to pick up seats for the GOP in the upcoming election, but declined to predict today exactly how big a dent his candidates will make in the 26-member Democratic majority on Nov. 6.

The name of the motorcycle rider killed in a head-on crash in Carson City on Tuesday has been identified. Vincent Wayne Gilpatrick, 33, of Carson City, died from injuries in the crash, said Sheriff Ken Furlong. A juvenile driving a Jeep Cherokee was taken to the hospital. Gilpatrick was a former corrections guard. His family is from the Ely area.

Carson City Soroptimist will host an Intro to Soroptimist Social Thursday, Nov. 8. Local business women, those recently retired from a profession, and those just embarking on a career are invited. This is an opportunity to meet members of the local club, learn about their projects, events, and scholarships, and experience their camaraderie in a fun and relaxed setting. The Carson Now site is back online. Our data center is located in New York, and Hurricane Sandy cut power to that part of the city. It was offline for a couple of hours on Tuesday as the storm hit, but they were able to get everything back running again on generators.

But this morning, the generators failed, and they were just now able to get them back running again. Hopefully that will keep everything going until full power is restored to the city.

UPDATE 5:30PM: A motorcycle and a vehicle reportedly collided this afternoon in Carson City, killing the motorcyclist. The accident was reported at around 4:50 p.m. at Camballeria Drive and Carson River Road. The accident victim, a man who has not yet been identified, was reported to be "not moving" and Care Flight was called.
The call was cancelled because the motorcyclist died from injuries, according to Carson City emergency personnel at the scene and confirmed by Sheriff Ken Furlong.

We are all getting tons of political mailers. And if you look at them closely you might notice that some are from other states. Specifically the Republican National mailers, which in Nevada are actually coming through Idaho and Colorado.
