The Carson City Historic District has been nominated by the city's Historic Resources Commission to be placed in the National Register of Historic Places, reports KRNV My News 4 Reno. Click here to read the story. The commission will discuss the nomination on Thursday, July 21 at 5:30 p.m in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center.

CARSON CITY — With our current long daylight hours, hot weather, gusty afternoon winds, low humidity and vegetation rapidly drying out, you need to be aware of the ever-increasing fire danger surrounding us.
Our countryside is tinder dry, and it would only take a moment of carelessness, sparks from target shooting, illegal fireworks, a hot vehicle muffler on a dirt road, an abandoned campfire or a tossed cigarette to create a roaring inferno.

A member of the public discovered a bear shot and dumped on the east side of Peavine Peak near Kiowa Pond and reported it to Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) game wardens last week.
Game wardens have initiated an investigation into the killing of the 200-pound male bear that had been shot several times.

Applications for the 2011 Special Sage Grouse Hunt at Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) are now available on the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) website.
The Sheldon hunt will be open for two weekends Sept. 17-18 and Sept. 24-25. This is a permitted hunt, with 75 permits awarded by random draw available for each hunt by reservation only.
The hunt is open to both residents and nonresidents.

This is a reminder that Nevada State Forester and Fire Warden, Pete Anderson, issued a warning on July 8 about fire danger throughout Nevada.

CARSON CITY – Gov. Brian Sandoval’s reluctant decision to support an extension of tax increases to balance the state budget in the 2011 legislative session does not appear to have caused him any lasting damage in the eyes of voters, according to the results of a recent survey by a GOP polling firm.

A fence that was burning in the 1700 block of Brown Street and reportedly touching off some vegetation was snuffed at around noon, according to Carson City fire crews reporting from the scene.
The fire was called in to dispatch at around 11:45 this morning. First arrivers at the scene reported heavy smoke with a fence on fire. As it began to spread, additional fire trucks were called in. Fire crews on the scene had asked for additional backup to assist as winds picked up.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

CARSON CITY – Term limited Assembly Speaker John Oceguera, D-Las Vegas, today announced he will run for Congress in one of four districts that have yet to be finalized in Nevada’s contested redistricting process.

Fareed Zakaria is a TV talk show who knows the complex world of economics, the Mideast and international politics. His book "The Post-American World, Release 2.0," paints a world where the United States is no longer the sole superpower. Not that superpowers are measured in size of armies but rather in economic sense.
Zakaria writes well and with a tremendous fund of knowledge, and while he paints a grim picture for the USA, he doesn't write the country off.

OK, so I missed the first seven Harry Potter films and the J.K Rowling books that served as the basis for the series. Bad planning or no planning. So when the last of the series, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," opened at the Fandango Galaxy multiplex with three theaters showing the film simultaneous, in 2-D and 3-D, I figured time to catch up.
