From Carson City I've probably hiked Dead Man's Creek opposite Washoe State Park at least 20 times, spring, summer and fall and once in mid-winter. It's about a 2-mile round trip with 300 feet of altitude gain.
At the end of the trail is a gazebo which looks out serenely on Washoe Lake and Slide Mountain. Last Sunday when I hobbled up (bad back) the gentle trail (Park Rangers call it "moderate"in difficulty) the westerly winds were steady and strong as is usual with the sweep of the valley allowing winds to gain strength.

Pyramid Lake, located about 30 miles north of Sparks, will open on Saturday, Oct. 1 to fishing for Lahontan cutthroat trout.
That large, desert lake (roughly the same surface size as Lake Tahoe) has a three-month trout closure, each year, from July 1 to Sept. 30.

Game biologists are often hard to understand. When trying to explain something to the everyday man, they forget to stop using all of their scientific terms and sometimes leave people more confused than ever.
When asked about the upcoming chukar hunting season, which begins Oct. 8, Nevada Department of Wildlife upland game biologist Shawn Espinosa wanted to avoid any confusion, “I think overall it's going to be a good to excellent season. Hunters are going to be very happy this year.”

CARSON CITY – Nevadans are more pessimistic now about the state of the economy than they have been since early 2010, according to the most recent poll commissioned by the Retail Association of Nevada.

The death toll from Friday's Reno air race crash has risen to 11, city of Reno spokeswoman Michele Anderson has confirmed. Anderson did not immediately have the person's name and could not say if the person died at a hospital or on the tarmac.
