The Tahoe Douglas Bomb Squad detonated a live World War II-era hand grenade after a couple discovered the explosive device while going through a friend’s belongings at a Topaz Ranch Estates home on Thursday.

At approximately 7 p.m. the couple drove the hand grenade to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office in Minden to turn the device over to authorities, said Douglas County Sheriff's Office Captain John Milby in a news release.

CARSON CITY – An organization that wants to see Yucca Mountain used as a temporary nuclear waste storage site with a research center to explore reprocessing has proposed an amendment to a bill in the Legislature to move its Energy Park idea forward.

CARSON CITY — Bethany Drysdale, who has promoted Nevada's tourism attractions for more than five years for the Nevada Commission on Tourism will head the Public Relations department beginning April 23, Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki announced this week.

Drysdale has served as Public Relations specialist for NCOT since October 2005. She succeeds Chris Chrystal, who is retiring as manager April 22 after a 48-year career in news reporting and public relations that included 13 years with the Commission.

A website that dedicates itself to Silver City and proposed gold mining around the historic Lyon County community has been launched.

SilverCityNvBlogspot.com was developed by a group of town residents with the idea of providing a citizen point of view as Comstock Mining, Inc., fueled by record gold prices, looks to change the land-use designation of a parcel it now occupies and has been doing exploratory drilling.

From a region with a crystal-blue famed lake to a state of 10,000 of them, non-stop daily service to Minneapolis, Minn., from Reno-Tahoe International Airport will begin July 1, airport officials announced today.

Dear Editor: As a long time resident of the Comstock, I have watched with dismay the erosion of the Comstock Historic District that has occurred because of open pit mining.

One need only travel from Virginia City to Carson City to see what used to be historical landscapes transformed into a series of ugly pit mines. The Comstock Historic District is a cultural and historic resource set aside for the people of Nevada. Pit mining erodes this resource visually, and endangers historic landscapes and structures.

CARSON CITY – A simplified campaign finance reform bill that would require most candidates to file their contribution and expense reports electronically was given a generally favorable reception today during an Assembly Committee hearing.

Sometimes one comes across an author never before noted and stumbles on a real writer of imagination and truth. Such was the case writh Margaret Atwood, author of many fine books of which "The Blind Assassin'' (Anchor Books, $14 papeerback) is one of her best. She is such a fine writer that one is almost loath to comment on her work, so I'll be brief here.

CARSON CITY – Despite citing the need to reform Nevada’s public employee pension plan, Gov. Brian Sandoval did not introduce a bill seeking changes to the retirement system by a deadline Monday.
Even so, Heidi Gansert, Sandoval’s chief of staff, said the administration will “be a part of the conversation” as other measures addressing potential reforms to the Public Employees’ Retirement System are considered in the 2011 legislative session.

State lawmakers are debating whether the minimum auto liability coverage Nevada drivers need to carry should be raised for the first time since 1954. Assemblyman William Horne (D-Dist. A34) says some Nevadans were driving Edsels and gas cost less than 50 cents a gallon the last time state lawmakers set the minimum rates for auto liability insurance. CARSON CITY – Overtime pay for working more than eight hours per day would disappear under a proposal from Sen. James Settelmeyer, R-Gardnerville.
While employers and chambers of commerce supported the bill, Settelmeyer said he brought Senate Bill 332 on behalf of employees.
