CARSON CITY – The number of active registered voters jumped by nearly 13,000 between the close of registration for the June primary and the end of June, with Republicans making a modest gain on Democrats, according to numbers compiled by the Nevada Secretary of State’s office.
Democrats increased their registration by 3,722 to 456,672, while Republicans raised their numbers by 6,493 to 398,898, the office reported.

The Roop Street widening project will continue this week with the following impacts expected:
— Effective Thursday, July 8, Roop Street will be closed to through traffic from William Street to Robinson Street. This closure will last until Sept. 1.
—The intersection of Caroline Street and Roop Street will be closed to through traffic from Thursday, July 8 through Sept. 1. Traffic may cross Roop Street at Washington Street.

Of the 152 bill draft requests submitted so far, mostly by lawmakers, three deal with cell phone use in vehicles: two to prohibit texting and a third to “restrict cell phone use� while driving.

It may be second verse but basic common sense deserves reminding from time-to-time as we approach the holiday weekend.
Don't play with fireworks in the forest, in the trees or in the neighborhood. Don't drink and drive. Don't lose your cool. Hydrate. Stay away from any warm potato salad that has sat in the sun for more than two hours; relax and enjoy the scenery and people around you.
