Stimulus funds will have created or saved 5,600 construction jobs by the end of the year, according to a press release issued yesterday by the Nevada Department of Transportation
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the release says, has provided about $201 million in funding for road construction in Nevada, and 90 percent of the funds have already been contracted out to construction companies.

RENO _ Most players go a lifetime without hitting 6-for-6. For former Western Nevada College baseball star Brian Barnett, "a while," when it comes to the last time he has gone 6-for-6 was a little more than a year.
Barnett had his second straight game in which he went 3-for-3 as he helped the University of Nevada baseball team (31-19-1) come back for an 8-6 win over UC Davis on Tuesday at Peccole Park. Barnett's 14th home run of the season gave the Wolf Pack that 8-6 lead in the seventh inning.

Carson High baseball players Colby Blueberg, Nick Domitrovich and David Charles have all been invited to a Major League tryout to be held at 8:30 a.m. Sunday at Manogue.
Blueberg, Domitrovich and Charles are among 60 college and high school players who were invited to the tryout which is being held by the Major League Scouting Bureau. Major League and college scouts will attend the tryout.

Last week, I sat down with Joe McCarthy, head of Carson City's Office of Business Development, and he provided some details about the Nugget Project that I hadn't heard before.

The biggest nugget is that the city is pursuing a 30-year, lease-to-own deal for the proposed library/discovery center and the land it sits on. McCarthy said that is the way the deal with P3 Development for the building will be, and that they are working to get the same deal for the land from the Hop and Mae Adams Foundation.

"There oughta be a rock club a little closer to home." There has certainly been a lot of talk about it; now it's time to get a rock club going in the Carson Valley.

Former Carson High standout Kayla Sanchez ran to sixth-place in the 400-meter hurdles and ran legs for Arizona State University relay teams that were top-three finishers at the Pacific-10 Conference Track and Field Championships in Berkeley, Calif., on Sunday.

Carson City's J.T. Cockerill and the Cal State Stanislaus University men's golf team will swing into action on Tuesday at the NCAA Division II Tournament in Noblesville, Ind.

A screening of the public television documentary "Liquid Assets: The Story of Our Water Infrastructure" will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday May, 20 in the Carson City Library Auditorium, 900 N. Roop St, Carson City. The event will be hosted by the American Society of Civil Engineers – Capital Branch.

The screening will be followed by a community discussion with Mark Brethauer P.E., a Senior Project Manager with Carson City Public Works. The event is free and open to the public.

A traffic stop near Airport Road in Carson City resulted in the arrest of two women, one of whom allegedly was in possession of a pharmaceutical drug without a prescription.
According to the arrest report, a vehicle was stopped on Sunday and an unidentified driver was arrested for DUI.
During the investigation, a deputy asked the arresting officer to have the vehicle towed. While conducting a vehicle inventory, a deputy found an orange pill bottle with the suspect's name on the top, according to the arrest report. The suspect was a passenger in the vehicle.

RENO — The Nevada Republican Party elected Mark Amodei its new chairman last night during a special Central Committee meeting at the Sienna Hotel and Casino.  Amodei, a former state senator, defeated Clark County Republican Party Political Director David Isbell by a vote of 218 to 54.
After the election, Amodei said he would focus on moving forward and defeating the Democrats in the upcoming elections. To do this, he says, he will focus on communication and collaboration within the party.

Brian Lester won the 1-meter diving while Ashton McIntosh, Tim Grunert, Zachary White and Luke Gentner combined to win the 200-yard freestyle relay as Carson High's boys took second as a team at the Northern 4A Regional Swimming and Diving Championships, which wrapped up at the Carson City Aquatic Facility on Saturday afternoon.

CARSON CITY — Is the next Phil Mickelson or Michelle Wie living in the Carson City area? Well the Fred and Judy Alexander Foundation wants to find out. That's why the foundation and the Sierra Nevada Chapter of the Northern California PGA Section will hold a free golf clinic — The 18th Annual Fred Alexander Memorial Family Golf Clinic — for children ages 6 to 17 on Sunday, May 16 at Eagle Valley Golf Course in Carson City.
The event begins at 11:45 a.m. and last until 4:30 p.m., with registration running from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Carson City deputies responded to a hit and run earlier tonight, in which a black BMW X5 was rear-ended, with the driver allegedly speeding away after her airbag deployed.

The suspect apparently hit the BMW near Fairview and Carson Street at about 6:30, and then drove away, darting in and out of traffic.

Two witnesses, each driving separate vehicles, followed the suspect, who was driving a white sedan. The witnesses followed the sedan from Fairview down Saliman to Highway 50, alerting dispatchers of the accident.

RENO — Now that the Carson High softball team has come close to doing something really special, CHS coach Scott Vickrey wants his squad to build on its momentum for possibly even a better finish next year.
 
Carson's season came to an end on Saturday at Bishop Manogue in the Northern 4A playoffs as the Senators were eliminated by Damonte Ranch 11-1 in five innings. But Carson's third place finish at zone should serve as a springboard for his young team, Vickrey said, which is losing just three seniors in Daria Leid, Megan Hein and Natalie Morrow.
