The closure of some U.S. Forest Service recreational facilities around the Lake Tahoe Basin has begun. Campgrounds and day-use areas traditionally close around mid-October. Several hundred Nevadans who registered to vote through the Secretary of State’s online system Tuesday may not have received confirmation of their registration status. A record number of users, 3,221, accessed registertovotenv.gov on October 2, surpassing the 3,000-person daily cap set by the system.

"Flockers" will deliver the birds to unsuspecting yards where they have been directed to roost, usually arriving unnoticed in the cloak of darkness. The recipient will be left with an explanation and care instructions. After 24-48 hours the Flamingo Advanced Retrieval Team (F.A.R.T.) will remove the flamingos and bring them to the next "victim."

At least two people sustained non-life threatening injuries and one was treated at the scene after a car drove into The Eye Center at 1299 Mountain Street in Carson City. The accident was reported shortly after 9 a.m. Witnesses to the accident said they heard a crash and saw that a car was inside the storage area of the building.
Two people were inside the car that was in the building. Both were able to get out though one person was partially trapped. A Jeep was clipped by the car before it went into the building. Debris from the accident area was scattered about 30-40 feet.

A Carson City woman was arrested and faces felony burglary charges after allegedly stealing jewelry from her mother.
Jaqueline Cunningham, 22, was arrested in the 2800 block of Highway 50 on Oct. 1. According to the arrest report, officers responded to a larceny call in which a woman reported her jewelry missing.
Authorities contacted a local pawn shop and it was determined that Cunningham had pawned $1,232 worth of jewelry. The jewelry was recovered and identified from the mother of the woman who reported it missing.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong has been on the front lines of fighting drugs his entire 35 year career. Lately, it has taken a turn for the worse. At 3:17 pm Wednesday, South Lake Tahoe police and fire personnel responded to the report of a structure fire at the Forest Manor, a multi unit two story apartment complex at 3754 Forest Avenue in South Lake Tahoe. As firefighters began to extinguish flames from unit 1 downstairs, police officers assisted with the evacuation of the entire complex.

CARSON CITY – A Democratic candidate for the state Assembly in District 9 in Clark County said today allegations by his GOP opponent that he is not a resident of the district are false.

Republican Assembly District 9 candidate Kelly Hurst on Tuesday filed a complaint in Clark County District Court against his Democratic opponent Andrew Martin alleging that Martin does not reside in the district and should be disqualified from the ballot.

High school teachers and students are invited to get involved in Nevada Poetry Out Loud, the dynamic poetry program that is structured similarly to the National Spelling Bee, but focuses on literary heritage through memorization and performance of classic and contemporary poetry. A bicyclist sustained injuries Wednesday after reportedly being hit by a vehicle at the intersection of College Parkway and Carson streets in Carson City.
The accident was reported at about 3:15 p.m. Carson City Fire Department EMTs arrived at the scene and reported an ambulance wasn't needed. However a few minutes later an ambulance was requested. Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies re-routed traffic around the accident. The age of the victim and whether it was a male or female is unknown.
The initial call into dispatch was that a truck hit the cyclist.

With October designated Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Carson City-based Advocates to End Domestic Violence will hold a Light the Night 5K and 10K Walk/Run at Riverview Park on October 20.

CARSON CITY – Increased financial disclosure, greater restrictions on contributions and gifts, and tougher penalties for campaign violations are the goals of new legislation for the 2013 Legislature detailed today by Secretary of State Ross Miller.

Hurst and his attorney Frank Cremen say that Martin never moved into the district as he claims.

CARSON CITY – Numbers released today by Secretary of State Ross Miller’s Elections Division show Democrats registered more than twice as many voters than Republicans in September as the deadline to participate in the Nov. 6 general election is now just over two weeks away.

The Carson City Greenhouse will offer tours of its premises on Saturday, October 6, 2012 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. At 10:30 a.m., Greenhouse manager Ray Saliga will present a workshop on propagating herbs from cuttings. A strong ridge of high pressure will push temperatures high temperatures 10 to 15 degrees above normal on Tuesday, with records possible in several locations in Eastern California and Western Nevada, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. The projected high for Tuesday in Carson City is 90 degrees. The record was 91 set in 1963.

Authorities are looking for a man, unarmed but believed dangerous, who escaped early this morning from the Virginia City Jail. Jeremy James Morales, escaped at about 1:50 this morning, according to Storey County authorities. He was being held in Storey County Jail on charges of sexual assault involving a minor.
Morales, 38, is 5' 11" tall and weighs about 220 pounds. He apparently locked a deputy inside his jail cell when the deputy was doing cell checks. He was scheduled to be sentenced to the Nevada Corrections Department today.

The local PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) chapter is again sponsoring Candidate’s Night this Thursday, October 4 at 7:00 p.m. The event will be held at in Carson City at the Business Resource Innovation Center, 108 East Proctor Street, Carson City from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

After 150 years, the Nevada State Prison is now a ghost town. By the time Nevada became a territory in 1861 the need for a place to house those who broke the law was glaringly apparent and it fell to the first territorial legislature was to establish a state prison.
