Patti LaBelle coming to Reno
Whether you know her as the Godmother of Soul, the High Priestess of Good Vibrations or the Queen of Rock & Soul, Patti LaBelle is ready to put her saucy stamp on Reno. See the original Lady Marmalade in concert at Silver Legacy Resort Casino on Friday Sept. 10 at 8 p.m. in the Grande Exposition Hall.
Patti LaBelle is all about passion, which has been reflected through music all her life. In 1959, she formed her first singing group, but LaBelle didn’t find commercial success until 1974 with a song called “Lady Marmalade.” The hit sent the girls on a whirlwind tour and the group became the first to play at the Metropolitan Opera House and the first black vocal group to land the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. After several more tries at success, the group dissolved in 1977, citing creative differences.
Solo success for Patti came in 1983 with her first charted hit album “If Only You Knew” which included top 10 R&B hit’s --- “I’m in Love Again” and “Love, Need and Want You.” LaBelle went on to record two songs for the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack in 1984 and the R&B turned Pop Star began reflecting a “New Attitude” to match her new hit’s title. Dressing in the flamboyant style known as ‘80s Glam helped her create a new image, one she still holds true to today.
Two Grammy awards and several albums later, LaBelle’s powerful stage presence and distinctive high-octave range make her one of the greatest R&B legends of all time. Her autobiography “Don’t Block the Blessings” topped the New York Times best seller list for several weeks upon its release in 1997. LaBelle has also put together a successful line of cookbooks, sauces and marinades under the “Lady Marmalade” name.
