Three of us (Don Hettrick, Bob “Slick” McCulloch and I) are back, safe and sound in Carson City after being contestants in the 16th annual Topaz Lake invitational fishing derby, which is sponsored by John Riordan.
That derby was held on Sunday-Monday-Tuesday, April 22-23-24, and it attracted some 70 fishermen from Nevada and California.
This year for the first time in history, the derby had a brand new fish category (bass) in addition to the regular trout category.
When the smoke and dust cleared after three days of fishing by all of the contestants, these were the 2012 winners:

CARSON CITY – Nevada’s Tax Department could enhance its audit efforts by adhering to its own risk assessment formula for determining which businesses to review for compliance, an audit released today said.

The audit of the agency by the state Division of Internal Audits found that it does not follow its risk assessment results when determining which businesses to analyze for potential tax collections.

Qualifying for a seed at the World Championship Robotics Championships is no easy feat. Teams compete in their local area to receive a coveted invitation to the international robotics champions at the World Festival, also known as the "Superbowl of Smarts".

Teams become ambassadors for their region and schools, and take on the additional challenge to earn their way to St. Louis, MO. Held at the Edward Jones Dome, in the biggest FIRST® Championship ever, 12,000 students from 32 countries competed in three robotics championships.

In conjunction with National Police Week, Thursday, May 3, 2012 the 15th Annual Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial ceremony will be held on the Capitol grounds in Carson City. The service will honor the 120 Nevada Peace Officers that have been killed in the line of duty. In 1998, the memorial was dedicated on the Capitol grounds to recognize the ultimate sacrifice these officers made in service of their communities.

Christopher Lash, 28, has been found guilty of Battery Causing Substantial Bodily Harm stemming from a March 25, 2011 altercation at a local bar in Carson City.

Carson City Sheriff’s deputies were called to a local establishment at 2:00 A.M. with reports of a man striking another man in the face with a pint glass. The suspect fled the scene when deputies arrived, but the deputies received statements from witnesses indicating Christopher Lash struck the victim, Nicholas Moen, in the face with a pint glass causing severe injuries.

CARSON CITY – A consultant hired by the cities of Henderson and Las Vegas to analyze the process used to distribute taxes to the counties and cities told lawmakers today the formula now used to make the allocations has weaknesses.

Carson City Sheriff's deputies arrested the following individuals over the weekend for felony allegations:

  • Jeffrey David Volosin, 29, a Gardnerville man, for several warrants in his name: lewdness with a child under the age of 14 (two counts) and sexual assault on a child under 14 (five counts). These warrants were issued on the 24th of February out of Carson City. Bail has been set at $250,000.

Those of us who live here are used to getting questions about brothels, especially the Moonlite BunnyRanch, which is usually described as being in or just outside Carson City.

Those questions have escalated greatly since "Pimpmaster General" Dennis Hof took over the place and broke with the unspoken Nevada brothel code to keep a low profile. On the contrary, Hof searches out publicity like a heat-seeking missile, quick to seek any venue where he can put himself and his ladies into the spotlight.
