CARSON CITY – Establishing school choice for parents and ending social promotion for students are two top priorities in Gov. Brian Sandoval’s education reform agenda for the 2013 legislative session, an administration official said today.

Linking pay to performance and providing professional development to ensure students have the best possible classroom teachers is a third major priority, said Dale Erquiaga, senior adviser to Sandoval.

CARSON CITY – The amount employees earn per week showed signs of improvement in 2011, further indicating Nevada’s economy is in on the mend, said Bill Anderson, chief economist for Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR).

Wages in Nevada averaged $829 per week in 2011, which represents a gain of 1.3 percent compared to 2010′s $818 average weekly wage. Gains in each of the first three quarters of the year were only partially offset by some sluggishness in the final months of the year.

The new C-A-L Ranch Store on North Carson Street had its official grand opening today, with Mayor Bob Crowell helping to cut the ribbon.

A big crowd was on hand for the event, completely filling the parking lot of the old Safeway building.

The store features a huge variety of products, everything from guns to dresses to live poultry.

The store has 32 employees.

Officers arrested the following individuals for felony allegations in the same incident Wednesday evening:

  • Rick Ozzy North, 22, a Kings Beach resident, for possession of marijuana and possession of marijuana with the intent to sell. Bail has been set at $10,000.
  • Timothy Patrick Lawson, 35, a Fresno, Calif. resident, for possession of marijuana and possession of marijuana with the intent to sell. Bail has been set at $10,000.

Roadside stations for inspections and decontaminations of motorized boats and watercraft are officially open for the 2012 boating season at five locations entering the Lake Tahoe Basin.
“Boat inspections are critical to maintaining the health of Lake Tahoe and our local recreation-based economy,” said Ted Thayer, TRPA’s Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinator. “Through the efforts of the Tahoe Resource Conservation District’s well-trained inspectors and other private and public partners committed to the Lake, we expect to have another successful season.”
