CARSON CITY – A state panel was told today that for yet another two-year state budget, there will be virtually no money available from property tax revenues for capital construction projects.

The state Public Works Board heard the disappointing news today as it began a two-day review of projects being sought by state agencies ranging from the Department of Corrections to Tourism and Cultural Affairs.

As the new fall term begins, the college welcomes several academic faculty members who have joined WNC in 2012 to fill crucial vacancies. Dr. Robert Whitcomb is the most recent, arriving in time to teach business courses this fall. He hails from Haines, Alaska, where he retired as director of Human Resources and Organizational Development for the Chilkoot Indian Association, a Native Sovereign Nation there.

Chili's in Carson City will donate 15 percent of patrons checks on Thursday, Sept. 13 to Carson City Recreation Department youth programs. Print out the flyer above and Chili's will make the donation.

This is a reminder that a special trout fishing season will open on the Friday before Labor Day.
August 31, 2012 is the Opening Day of the Lahontan Cutthroat Trout fishing season at Heenan Lake in nearby Alpine County, Calif.
Each year, that season opens the Friday before Labor Day and closes the last Sunday in October (October 28 this year). If you’re interested and if you would like to enjoy a totally different fishing experience, plan to spend August 31 at that easy-to-get-to location.

CARSON CITY – A panel of lawmakers today recommended that Nevada’s public education funding formula be revised to take into account the higher cost of educating specific groups of students, including English-language learners and children in poverty.

But lawmakers also acknowledged that updating the formula won’t mean any significant changes in funding for the state’s 17 school districts until the state’s economy improves and tax revenues increase.

There is no proposal to shift funding from one district to another to fund a new weighted formula.

About 100 employees were let go from the Chromalloy plant in Carson City, the company confirmed on Tuesday.
Company spokesperson Cathy Gedvilas reports that the facility on Arrowhead Drive has experienced a decline in work due in part to reductions in military spending, and a flat economy in Europe and Asia affecting commercial aerospace.

CARSON CITY – If there was any question about whether the gun debate is a controversial topic in Nevada as well as nationally, a clear answer was provided today at a meeting of the Advisory Commission on the Administration of Justice.

A proposed discussion on assault weapons was removed from the agenda by a vote of the panel before it could even begin.
