The Carson City Board of Supervisors will discuss this week what groups will receive money this year out of the $100,000 Redevelopment fund for special events.

There are requests for $118,275, so the supervisors will have to pick which groups will not get what they asked for at the board's next meeting on April 5 at 8:30 a.m. in the Sierra Room at the Carson City Community Center.

There will be work at the following locations as a result of the Freeway Landscaping Project. No closures are expected, but traffic control will be in effect.

  • College Parkway in the vicinity of the Freeway.
  • US Highway 50 in the vicinity of the Freeway.
  • Northgate Lane between Jumbo Court and Dyer Court.
  • Emerson Drive between Mark Way and College Parkway.
  • North Carson Street, in the vicinity of the freeway overpass.
  • Arrowhead Drive between N. Carson Street and Garnet Way.

The Carson Valley Trails Association (CVTA) needs volunteers for scheduled trail work days in April on the Fay-Luther and Genoa Trail systems. Anyone who is interested is welcome to participate; no previous trail building experience is required. Volunteers must wear long pants, long-sleeved shirt, hiking boots, work gloves and sunglasses. Tools and hard hats are provided. Bring food and water.

CARSON CITY – Nevada’s unemployment rate fell four-tenths of a percentage point in February to a seasonally adjusted 12.3 percent, but the news is not all positive, a state agency reported today.

Bill Anderson, chief economist with the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR), said an argument can be made that the forces behind the drop in the jobless rate were signs of weakness.

A report released today by the Nevada Department of Taxation shows that statewide taxable sales in January rose 4.8 percent compared to the prior year.

Statewide, taxable sales are up 7.2 percent for the fiscal year.

In Carson City, sales rose 4.1 percent in January, putting the city ahead by 3.2 percent for the fiscal year.

Washoe County saw a 6.1 percent increase in January, Lyon County a 5.5 percent rise, and Storey County a 25.8 percent increase over prior year. Taxable sales in Douglas County dropped 3.1 percent, one of only two counties in the state that saw a decline.

CARSON CITY – A lengthy legal dispute with the contractor who built the first phase of the Carson City freeway bypass has been recommended for settlement at a cost to the state of nearly $14 million.

The Nevada Department of Transportation is recommending that the Board of Examiners approve the mediated settlement with Ames Construction at its meeting Tuesday.

A group of young men and women who are walking across the country to raise awareness for the DREAM Act made a stop in Carson City on Wednesday, in an unsuccessful attempt to elicit support from Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval.

The Campaign For An American DREAM walkers each have their life stories about how they or their family members came to this country as children, but now face deportation because of their immigration status.
