Below is a recent column that addresses some of what will be discussed at the presentation.

The United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra has chosen several Carson City area nonprofit organizations and agencies to help with funding in areas that address crime and substance abuse prevention among youth.

The partnerships, announced Monday, are aimed to address the complex conditions that are putting youth at risk, said Karen Barsell, CEO and president of United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra.

A Carson High senior will pull out all the musical stops with the help of some of her friends to raise awareness of a rare, genetic disease that has stricken a family member.

On Saturday April 13 at Comma Coffee, Carson City will be "Singing for Cystinosis." This is a musical showcase promoted by Carson High senior Emily Morris and a fundraiser to raise awareness of Cystinosis, an "orphan" disease with about 500 people - mostly children - stricken with it in the United States and more than 2,000 worldwide. It is a rare disease that receives little or no funding to find a cure.

Over the years, Congress has enacted many tax laws relating to education.
Those laws can be divided into two main categories: (1) items to help taxpayers meet the current higher education expenses and (2) laws to encourage taxpayers to save for future higher education expenses.
