Carson City Health and Human Services is pleased to announce the appointment of Cindy Hannah as the manager of Carson City Animal Services. Hannah has been employed at Carson City Health and Human Services for 3 years and served as the manager of the Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion Division of the Health Department prior to taking the position at Animal Services.

UPDATE: Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong released the following information on Friday afternoon's robbery of the Wells Fargo Bank at the corner of William Street and Saliman Road. The suspect, Terry Wayne Fowler, 51, who was armed with a folding knife, was booked into Carson City Jail on robbery charges.

If you bought rental real estate years ago before the Great Recession and it has gone down in value, you might have a big gain if you sell it. That is especially true if it is rental real estate and you have claimed depreciation expense for many years.

The way to postpone the gain might be to trade it for other investment real estate of equal or greater value. Section 1031 of the Internal Revenue Code allows you to trade for “like kind” property without paying tax on the gain unless you get cash out and/or have more mortgage given up than mortgage assumed on the new property.

An 81-year-old Gardnerville man faces a murder charge after he allegedly shot and killed his caretaker with a shotgun at his Fish Springs home on Thursday.

Melvin Norlund was being held without bail and booked on a charge of murder after shooting 51-year-old Catherine Mary Costanza of Concord, Calif, said Douglas County Sheriff's Sgt. Pat Brooks.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded at 1:20 p.m. Thursday to a call of a person shot in the 1300 block of Homestead Road. Deputies arrived on scene and found Costanza dead from an apparent gunshot wound, said Brooks.

A 41-year-old woman was injured late Friday morning in a pedestrian accident in the area of Research and College Parkway in Carson City.
The woman was struck by a vehicle at around 11:20 a.m., according to first responders at the scene via scanner dispatch.

Santa Claus makes room for lots of children on his express runs at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, 14 and 15.

The historic and picturesque V&T Railway steam locomotive No. 25 pulls Santa Train, departing Carson City’s Wabuska Depot at the corner of Fairview Drive and Carson Street from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. All seats are $3 and children 3 and younger are free. Tickets are available at the depot on days the train operates.

Grant money generated through the sale of Nevada Lake Tahoe license plates is available for projects designed to preserve and restore the lake, the state's division of lands announced Friday.

Around $350,000 generated from the plate sales will be available to public agencies seeking funding, according to a news release. Proposals which include the implementation of capital improvement projects that further the attainment of the TRPA Environmental Thresholds will be prioritized in this funding cycle.

A 20-year-old Carson City man was was arrested Thursday and admitted to felony embezzlement from Walmart, his employer.

Kyle James Bettencourt is being held in Carson City Jail on $20,000 bond. According to the arrest report, officers were dispatched to Walmart on Market Street and spoke with store security personnel who advised they had been monitoring Bettencourt's cash transactions while he was working the register.
