CARSON CITY – Assemblyman Harvey Munford, D-Las Vegas, said today he will try again with a bill in the 2013 session to impose a fee on some items sold at fast-food restaurants in an effort to help combat the national obesity epidemic.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors will be discussing on Thursday an amendment to the previous redevelopment incentive loan package offered to Micheal Hohl Motors to keep the company's three dealerships in the county.

The company has already received $2.4 million in redevelopment funds that was used to help build the new Honda and Subaru dealerships on South Carson Street, and is preparing to take out the remaining $2.4 million for remodeling of the GM dealership.

CARSON CITY – The Silver State Health Insurance Exchange is moving forward to ensure that Nevada will have a state based exchange operational by Oct. 1, 2013, following the Supreme Court ruling Thursday upholding most of the federal health care law.

To date the Exchange has been awarded approximately $24.7 million in federal grants to pay for its establishment and implementation.

Downtown Carson City was alive this morning as the Legends of the West Show & Shine and Bike Fest kicked off. Carson Street is closed between Robinson and Musser for the car and motorcycle show. The event features classic cars, food, drinks music and fun.

Part of the event includes the Carson City Sheriff's Office 9th Annual Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge in front of the Carson Nugget. Watch as motorcycle patrol personnel from around the state work their big bikes through an obstacle course.

The event goes on all day until 7 p.m.

Carson City Sheriff's deputies arrested a man on Thursday for allegedly stealing a debit card out of a vehicle and using it to buy beer, cigarettes, food and a laptop computer.

According to the arrest report, the victim stated that he keeps the card in his vehicle. The victim's bank notified him of some unusual purchases made on that card on June 26. The victim said that was the same day he took the vehicle to a business in the 1800 block of Highway 50 East to have it serviced, and that the card was now missing.

CARSON CITY – Gov. Brian Sandoval says he is disappointed that Clark County has decided to sue to recover $102.5 million in property taxes taken by the 2009 Legislature to balance Nevada’s budget, but said the “state is on very solid ground in this case.”

CARSON CITY – The Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) has voted to approve two new standards that the group says will substantially improve the accounting and financial reporting of public employee pensions by state and local governments.

The Nevada Highway Patrol, along with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, Sparks Police Department, and the Carson City Sheriff’s Office are planning a sobriety check point at Lake Tahoe for the Fourth of July holiday.
The check point will be held in Incline Village and is being funded by a Joining Forces grant from the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety.
Due to the fireworks display and other special events planned at Lake Tahoe, a large increase in both vehicular and pedestrian traffic expected during the holiday, said NHP Sgt. Scott Farmer.

I recently was taking a trip back to the North East and needed a few books for my long flight from Reno. After hearing about Bonners Fairy through Elizabeth’s husband Dave, whom I work with, I was intrigued. He gave me a copy before I left and after reading the first one I was hooked! Soon to follow, I was anxious to start the second book, A New Kind of Battle. Once I got my hands on a copy, it took me less than 24 hours to read. I was eager to find out what our favorite characters were up to, and how things were panning out in Bonners Ferry and Roan.
