BLM pinyon pine and juniper Christmas tree cutting permits available

The Bureau of Land Management Carson City District has begun selling Christmas tree cutting permits. The permits allow cutting a pinyon pine or juniper tree on designated BLM lands primarily in the Pinenut Mountains between Carson City and Yerington, the Clan Alpine and Desatoya mountains east of Fallon, and the Excelsior Mountains southeast of Hawthorne. Maps and directions are available with permit purchase. The cost per permit is $5.

Carson City road report for Nov. 19-25

The Carson City area road maintenance report for the week of Nov. 19-25 has two projects underway. Monday through Wednesday Curry Street will be closed between 6th Street and 7th Street due to construction activity. Detours will be signed.
Shoulder work on California Street and Appion Way near Ross Gold Park will continue Monday through Wednesday. The maintenance is due to utility relocation related to the next phase of the Carson City Freeway. No delays are expected.

Promoting her personal platform, “running against obesity” Miss Eagle Valley Brooklyn Maw is hosting the Miss Eagle Valley's 2012 Turkey Trot at Carson High School on Saturday.
For those wanting to be proactive, Kaia F.I.T. will hold its fourth annual Gratitude Gallop 5K and 8K on Thanksgiving morning, which is a fundraiser for Food for Thought.

Sens. Harry Reid and John Ensign had a famous non-aggression pact. Sens. Reid and Dean Heller? Well, at least they’ve had breakfast together.
Now that the election is over, one of the biggest questions for Nevada is what the Reid-Heller relationship will look like.
For the past 18 months, it hasn’t been pretty.
When Democratic Rep. Shelley Berkley was challenging Heller to represent Nevada in the Senate, Reid used the strength of his majority leadership to strike at Heller, who was serving out the rest of Ensign’s term.

Carson City Symphony Strings in the Schools presents 'This is not a Christmas Concert'

Strings in the Schools, Carson City Symphony's after-school program, presents its third annual "This is Not a Christmas Concert" on Tuesday, December 4, 6:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St., Carson City.

About 80 string players, including Carson City public-, private-, and home-schooled students, and students from surrounding areas, will perform several pieces, from classics to folk and fiddle tunes, including Pachelbel's Canon in D, Lackawanna Locomotive, and Japanese Hoedown. Admission is free.

Dayton Rice Project Feeds Families for Three Months

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Dayton Ward, is hosting its second annual fundraiser and rice-canning event to help support the Dayton Food Pantry.

The Dayton Rice Project consists of a fundraiser to obtain the needed funds to purchase bulk rice and canning supplies. “Church and community members are encouraged to abstain from food for one or more meals and donate the money that would have been spent on food to support the project,” says Pam Neumeister, Dayton Ward Humanitarian Specialist.

Average weekly wages for Nevadans trend up from recessionary lows

Weekly wages for Nevada workers continue to show improvement, indicating the state’s economy is on the mend, said Bill Anderson, chief economist for the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

“Average weekly wages in Nevada have been trending up since bottoming out in the recession,” Anderson said in a news release. “Specifically, during the first half of the year, wages in Nevada averaged $830, a rise of 2.6 percent relative to the first half of 2011 when they came in $809 per week.”

Carson City man wanted for exploiting elderly woman found dead

A man wanted in connection with a case of elder exploitation from Carson City has been found dead, having apparently killed himself.
A car belonging to 64-year-old Ronnal Chancellor was found Friday morning at a hotel near the airport in Ontario, California. He was wanted for stealing $50,000 from a Carson City woman he had told he wanted to marry.

Carson City and Reno Hostess stores to close Tuesday

Hostess Brands Inc.’s outlets in Carson City and Reno will close at 5 p.m. Tuesday as part of the company’s announced intent Friday to wind down operations after struggling to keep up with rising labor costs and the ever-changing tastes of Americans.
The company, whose roster of brands dating as far back as 1888 including iconic childhood treats such as Twinkies, Ding Dongs, Wonder Bread and Drakes, filed a motion to liquidate Friday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court after striking workers across the country crippled its ability to maintain production.

Polar Express tickets aboard Carson City V&T have sold out; two options available for train enthusiasts

The 2012 Polar Express train aboard the historic V&T Railway in Carson City has sold all of its tickets, officials said. The all-ages train ride is set for 15 different dates, Nov. 23 through Dec. 23. The V&T officially sold all 10,794 of its tickets as of Thursday, said Candy Duncan, executive director of the Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau.
