It’s turning out to be one of those winters that isn’t very mountain bike friendly. Freezing temperatures are keeping the roads icy in town, and there is bicycle-stopping deep snow in the nearby mountains. Thankfully there is another way to enjoy our local trails if you’re willing to let go of the handlebars and grab some poles.

In a letter highlighting the party’s recent difficulties with female voters, a group of Republican women has accused the state Senate’s Republican leader of sidelining the caucus’s only woman.

In the letter to Senate Minority Leader Michael Roberson dated Tuesday, the group of Republican women complained that Sen. Barbara Cegavske, the longest serving state senator, lost her plum seat on the Senate Finance Committee and did not receive a position in caucus leadership.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s help in locating a missing 19 year old female, Alyssa Byrne, who was attending the SnowGlobe music event in South Lake Tahoe on New Years Eve.

The circumstances to her disappearance are unknown at this time. Douglas County Search and Rescue has been activated to assist in an area search.

Alyssa Byrne, from Petaluma, Calif., is 5 foot 3 inches tall and 125 pounds. She has black hair and blue eyes, last seen wearing a black sweatshirt, black yoga type pants, black snow boots and her hair was pulled back.

UPDATE: 8:27 PM: The Reno Gazette-Journal reports the 21-year-old Reno woman reported missing since early New Year's day, Chantel Good, has been found unhurt. Still missing is a 19-year-old Petaluma woman, Alyssa Marie Byrne.

UPDATE 7:35PM: Reno Channel 2 KTVN reports that a 21-year-old Reno woman is missing as well as a 19-year-old Petaluma woman.

Chantel Good is described as 5 foot 4 inches and was last seen wearing brown boots, a flower-printed blue dress, a creme/beige pullover sweater, and a pink Aztec-design sweater. She was holding a brown satchel.

Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies dealt with a number of misdemeanor-related crimes in the days leading up to the New Year's holiday period, with several arrests made for domestic abuse, fighting and driving under the influence. Here are some of those arrests:

A workshop on responding to bullying LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning) teens will be offered for parents and Carson City community members on Jan. 15. The workshop will be led by Christopher Daniels, who is an educator with Planned Parenthood Mar Monte. It begins at 7 p.m. at the BRIC (Business Resource Innovation Center), 108 East Proctor Street, Carson City, Nev. The public is invited to attend.

Carson City Public Works reports this morning that because of holiday staffing issues and, most recently, frozen equipment issues, Waste Management is running behind in picking up Christmas trees.
They are playing catch up this week and next. If you are concerned that you have been missed, please call Waste Management directly at (775) 887-0402.
