A 28-year-old Carson City woman faces a felony grand larceny charge after allegedly trying to steal approximately 40 items of clothing valued at around $1,000 from Kohls.
Lindsie Newman was arrested Monday 6:45 p.m. after store security stopped her as she left the store without paying. The woman placed items of clothing in a purse and in a plastic bag, according to the arrest report.

Dance floors around town are heating up as contestants for ‘Dancing with the Stars’, Carson City Edition, polish their routines. The event takes place Saturday, March 9, 7 p.m. at the Carson High School gymnasium.

Local stars expected to compete include Sheriff Ken Furlong, District Attorney Neil Rombardo, City Supervisor/Adele’s co-owner Karen Abowd, Miss Carson City Vannesa Macias, and several others. They are teamed up with experienced dancers as they vie for the mirror ball trophy.

Winter weather has returned to the region with snow falling in Carson City and in the Sierra. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect through 10 Wednesday night for South Lake Tahoe, Truckee and Incline Village. A Wind Advisory is in effect for Carson City and much of Western Nevada.

The Carson City Public Works Department will give a presentation and conduct a workshop Thursday, March 14 to answer questions and take public comment regarding proposed plans to create a pedestrian-friendly environment on Carson Street through the downtown area.

The presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Center, Sierra Room. The public is invited to ask questions of Public Works staff regarding the project and provide comments regarding the conceptual plans.

UPDATE: Wild horse advocates will hold a rally in front of the Nevada Legislature Thursday, March 7, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. to protest the BLM's decision to remove a herd of 11 wild horses from the area. The advocates say the want the horses, picked up from the BLM last week, to be put back into the wild. The BLM contends the horses have been problematic and pose a safety hazard.

The Humane Society of the United States is the latest animal rights organization to denounce the Bureau of Land Management’s decision to remove a small band of wild horses located east of Carson City, Nev., in the Pine Nut Herd Management Area.

Permits will be available March 11 for opening burning that will run from March 16 to April 14, the Carson City Fire Department announced Tuesday.

The open burn period gives residents in the city an opportunity to dispose of accumulated weeds and yard debris. In order to make this a safe experience, the Carson City Fire Department requires a burn permit and valid permit number before residents are allowed to to burn. Permits will be issued on a walk-in basis at the following locations:

CARSON CITY — Nevada Senate Republicans called on the Legislature today to both remove the mining industry’s constitutional tax protections and find a way to increase taxes on the industry as an alternative to the margins tax ballot initiative.
