The U.S. Navy will name a Joint High Speed Vessel after Nevada’s Capital, Carson City. The vessel will be called The United States Naval Ship Carson City.

Nevada Sen. Harry Reid and Congressman Mark Amodei were both informed this week of the USNS Carson City decision by Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus during a meeting in the U.S. Capitol.

A memorial dedicated to Nevada’s fallen soldiers could be the next monument in Carson City’s Capitol Complex with the passing of Senate Bill 230 by the Committee on Natural Resources.

The American Legion, the largest veteran’s service organization in the state, is acting as the lead organization in completing the project and needs approval to use state grounds.

Originally Gold Star Families, a smaller organization was going to spearhead the project. Thursday's "amend and do pass" allowed The American Legion to take the reigns.

UPDATE 6:10PM: A manhunt ended at the Carson High School bus yard early Friday night with the arrest of a suspect believed to have intentionally rammed a Carson City Sheriff's patrol vehicle after a chase in a stolen car late Thursday.

Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies had been searching for the man since Thursday night and found him hiding inside a school bus in the vehicle maintenance yard of Carson High School. He was taken into custody at 5:24 p.m.

Early intervention matters. It's a theme that has empowered programs like DARE in Carson City schools and is a benchmark for programs run through the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada.

On Wednesday, 400 children of all ages got to meet those adults in the field who maintain public safety. The Spring Safety Fair, a partnership through the Carson City Sheriff’s Office and Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada, was a success on all levels.

Senate Joint Resolution 13, which would legalize same-sex marriage in Nevada, was passed in the Senate Committee on Legislative Operations and Elections with a vote of 3-2. The bill had been amended since it was first discussed in the committee on March 26, with the new language stating that Nevada and its political subdivisions will recognize marriages and issue marriage licenses regardless of gender.

Applications are being sought to fill two open seats on the Carson City Planning Commission. The commission oversees all matters pertaining to Carson City's planning and zoning, land use and growth management.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors will interview and then appoint the qualified applicants for the two seats that will expire in June 2017. Applicants must be willing to serve approximately 12 to 16 hours a month.

Life can change in a moment. At 8:56 on September 6, 2011, a deeply disturbed man with an automatic weapon stepped out of his car outside a Carson City, Nevada restaurant. In the moment that followed, he fired nearly 80 rounds – spraying bullets across a parking lot and into an IHOP packed with breakfast customers – killing four people and wounding 7 others before taking his own life.

The head of the Carson City library system has been hired to become Marin's chief librarian.

Sara Jones emerged as the frontrunner among two out-of-county finalists and will be officially appointed to the $150,000-a-year post when Marin County supervisors meet on Tuesday, according to Eric Engelbart, a county administration analyst.
