Murphy the miracle dog was adopted by Honey Tapley and family on Thursday, May 9.

Honey was one of the good samaritans who stopped to help him after he had been hit on Highway 50 in Mound House and left for dead.

UPDATE: KOLO Channel 8 Reno reports that a fire Sunday night was intentionally set and a man is in custody. Investigators told the news station that the man was distraught and attempted to commit suicide when he lit the fire to the home. He escaped and no one else was injured.

A Carson City home was destroyed by fire Sunday, the second such fire in a residential area in just over 24 hours.

Carson City, Douglas County and Lake Tahoe area firefighters were called to a brush fire Sunday afternoon up Highway 50, about halfway from Spooner Summit.

The fire was reported at around 4:35 p.m. on the valley side, with fire crews accessing from the eastbound lane and entering from the south side, according to dispatch. Initial reports are that it may be a burn pile that spread. However Carson Now reader Donna Angell says that's not the case.

Minden resident Krista Lukas has published her debut poetry collection "Fans of My Unconscious." She will read from her collection at two venues in June: the Mile High Jazz Band’s Jazz and Poetry event at Comma Coffee in Carson City on June 11, 7:30 p.m., and the Ventana Sierra Advanced Writers Conference at Western Nevada College in Carson City on June 14 at 6:30 p.m.

The book is published by The Black Rock Press, University of Nevada, Reno, 2013.

Fire destroyed at least four units at the Parkway Plaza apartment complex in Carson City early Saturday evening, fire officials confirmed.

No one was hurt in the blaze in which two families escaped injuries when the fire began to spread quickly, said Tom Tarulli, assistant fire chief for Carson City Fire Department. Two other families were not home at the time of the fire, which happened in building R, which occupies several two-level apartments.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

A Carson City man was taken by CareFlight to Renown Medical Center in Reno after the truck he was driving hit a power pole Saturday afternoon at the corner of Musser and Minnesota streets.

The condition of the man is unknown at this time. No other injuries were reported. The accident happened shortly before 4 p.m. The driver was conscious at the time he was taken by ambulance to the former Carson Tahoe Hospital site a few blocks from the accident scene where he was picked up by air ambulance.

The cause of the accident is unknown at this time.

There are few teams that can compete with one that allows just a single run in three tournament games. Western Nevada College pitchers completed a dominant Region 18 baseball tournament performance with a 6-0 championship victory against College of Southern Nevada on Saturday in Henderson.

“Our guys were ready to play,” said WNC coach D.J. Whittemore. “They earned it. They grinded it out all year, and they kept believing in one another and themselves.’

Wildcats’ right-hander Philip Belding tossed a four-hit gem to provide WNC with its third straight complete-game pitching effort.

Here is the Carson City road maintenance and construction report for the week of May 13-19.
Beginning Monday, May 13 through Friday, May 17, Lompa Lane will be closed between Highway 50 East and Menlo Drive.

Detours will be marked. In addition, the JAC bus routes 2A and 2B will be re-routed to follow the detour route and the bus stops on Lompa Lane and Menlo Drive will be temporarily closed during the road closure.

A Carson City Sheriff's sergeant recently resigned after allegations that he allegedly exposed himself to a female deputy between January and February of 2013.
