Ty Robben, who is facing charges he libeled and tried to intimidate Justice of the Peace John Tatro, on Monday lost his bid to disqualify the district attorney from prosecuting him.

Jason Bender, 29, received a life sentence Monday with a possibility of parole after serving 10 years in prison for lewd acts upon a 6-year old child, according to the Carson City District Attorney's Office.

Bender, who was recently released from prison for an unrelated drug charge, groped a six year old female while her family and other adults were in a nearby room. The child later disclosed the fondling to her mother and Bender’s sister who in turn reported the crime to authorities.

At that last BOS meeting, a majority vote (Crowell, Abowd & Bonkowski) had approved the agenda item to revitalize all corridors, and build the MAC & Animal Shelter. However, after the vote staff had been directed not to pursue this as it was felt the votes would not be forthcoming when it came back to the Board.

The Toys for Tots HOTLINE will be open for families requesting toys for Christmas. The hotline opens December 2nd through December 23rd from 9am to 4pm Monday through Friday.

Toys for Tots will be serving children in Carson, Douglas, Storey and Lyon counties. The HOTLINE NUMBER IS 884-TOYS.

Toys for Tots will be kicking off the 2013 campaign with our local Marines at all three Walmart stores on Friday, November 29 and Saturday, November 30.

Continuing its 122-year national tradition, Salvation Army of Carson City launched its Red Kettle fundraising campaign Monday with bells ringing at 15 local retailers, said Carson City Corps Lt. Mark Cyr. Another 10 sites will be added by the end of this week to make a total of 25 Red Kettle bell ringers.

Restaurant inspections are made weekly by the Carson City Health and Human Services Environmental Health Division. Inspections for the week ending Nov. 22 include a convenience and liquor store, restaurants, fast food restaurants; a super center deli and meat department and the food facility at the Carson City juvenile detention kitchen.

A 25-year-old Carson City was arrested Nov. 24, 11:01 p.m. He faces felony warrant charges of domestic battery and failure to appear out of Del Norte Superior Court in California. Daniel Glenn is being held on $35,000. He was stopped doing 50 in a 35 mph zone while traveling northbound on Lompa Lane.

In other felony arrests:
A 49-year-old Carson City man faces a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance and three misdemeanor charges. James Henry Minor Jr. was arrested Nov. 22, 5:38 p.m. in the 1500 block of Airport Road.

A 27-year-old Carson City woman faces a gross misdemeanor charge of child endangerment after being arrested Nov. 22, 4:37 p.m. in the 800 block of North Carson Street. Her 29-year-old boyfriend also faces gross misdemeanor child endangerment charges.

According an arrest report by the Carson City Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to the location after a report of two men fighting and threatening to throw each other off of a two-story balcony. Officers arrived and met with a woman holding her 22-day-old son.

Bently Biofuels and The Western Sustainability Pollution and Prevention Network are teaming to provide collection sites around the region so that residents have an environmentally safe way to get rid of cooking oil used to deep fry their holiday turkeys.

During the holiday season the two organizations are reaching out to the Carson City, Carson Valley, Reno and Lake Tahoe communities to encourage recycling of cooking oil used at homes throughout the region. Collection bins will be placed in various locations throughout the community from Thanksgiving until New Year’s Eve.

Several students from the Carson City School District will be recognized Tuesday for their submissions to the 2013-2014 American Citizen Essay Contest.
The students will be honored beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center.

Among the winners are Vidhi Pandit, a 5th grader at Bordewich Bray Elementary School. She submitted the winning elementary school essay below that was passed to Carson Now by her proud parents, Girish and Dr. Su Pandit of Carson City.
