Comedienne Paula Poundstone has canceled her Friday appearance in Carson City due to a family emergency. Friends of the Carson Ciy Library President Phyllis Patton said tickets will be refunded and more information will be made available soon.
The show will be scheduled at a later date, Patton said. Ticket sales had started out slow but began to pick up this week, she said.

A Carson City woman faces felony embezzlement charges after allegedly stealing an estimated $140,000 as office manager of CINC Industries, an environmental engineering company formerly owned by actor Kevin Costner.
Barbara Jean Larson, 56, was arrested October 9 and faces felony charges of obtaining money by false pretenses, uttering a forged instrument and embezzlement. She is due in Carson City Justice Court on Nov. 6. The woman admitted to stealing and told investigators that she has a gambling problem.

CARSON CITY – A Carson City District Judge today ruled an initiative petition being circulated by teachers to levy a 2 percent tax on companies making gross revenues in excess of $1 million a year to raise money to support public education is invalid.

In his ruling, Judge James Wilson found that the description of effect used to explain to voters the intent of the petition is incomplete.

Krys Bart’s retirement as president/CEO of the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority is still a year away, but the process of finding her replacement has begun.
The authority’s board of directors is looking to hire a search firm to come up with candidates for the position Bart has held for the past 14 years and whose three-year contract expires in December 2013.

I agree with the message different authorities are trying to send with sports, but some are doing it in the wrong way. You cannot erase accomplishments no matter how they were obtained. You cannot erase what actually happened. I do not agree with erasing the books, in any sport, at any level.

Monday morning has brought the first winter snow of the season to Lake Tahoe and the Sierra. Light to moderate snow is being reported this morning throughout the basin. The National Weather Service calls for 10 to 18 inches above 7,000 feet and 4 to 8 inches at lake level. A winter storm warning runs through Tuesday morning.

Organizers of the Carson City Chamber of Commerce Soup's On Candidate Forum set for Tuesday at Gold Dust West would like to have RSVP's today, Monday, by noon. Featured at the luncheon will be the candidates for the Carson City Supervisor Ward 2 race, Brad Bonkowski and Dennis Johnson and Ward 4 contestants incumbent Molly Walt and Jim Shirk. Questions will be fielded from the audience.
