CARSON CITY, NEVADA-Carson City Library will present the official book launch of Nevada State Prison, published by Arcadia Publishing and to be released on Monday, March 26th, at 6:00 p.m. The authors of this book include Jennifer E. Riddle, an archaeologist; Sena M. Loyd, a research librarian; and Stacy L. Branham and Curt Thomas, officers of the Nevada State Prison.

It's a Green green Green World! Celebrate St. Patrick's Day at the Governor's Mansion by drinking green beer, wine or liquor and playing a trivia game. Enjoy the advent of spring by bidding on silent auction items. Feel the impacts of green energy by wearing vintage fashions from our local thrift and consignment stores. You might win a prize for the best dressed or best deal. You can also see a lot of "experienced" fashions from our local celebrity models. Get up! Stand up! with Occupy Carson City participants as we speak out against government failures and corporate abuses on Saturdays from 12-2pm. As fellow citizens, we will peacefully rally for immediate change on the public sidewalks in front of the State Legislative building at 401 S. Carson St. downtown.

We have music and plenty of signs; feel free to bring a flag, your own sign, and any musical instrument (small drums, flutes and maracas are nice for our short marches).

The Rotary Club of Carson City and High Sierra Brewing Company presents the Beer and Pizza Championships, March 31 at Carson Mall.

Come and taste the best beer and pizza in the region, and vote for your favorite. You can also enjoy the Final Four on TV at the same time, or take part in basketball shooting contests. There will be a live auction for trips and events, a silent auction for great local gifts, and a drawing for a Samuel Adams trip to Boston.

CARSON CITY, NEVADA-Carson City Library and Nevada Legal Services have teamed together to provide free legal educational clinics and workshops every 4th Thursday, of each month. The next clinic is scheduled on Thursday, March 22nd. The 1:00 workshop will provide general instructions and assistance regarding the completion of self-help forms for those who are self-represented litigants. A Notary Public will also be available. Following the self-help workshop, a free legal education clinic will be held from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Family Law Education will be the topic covered on the 22nd.

Prospective students, parents and community members are invited to explore the reality of customized teaching and learning during the Spring 2012 Custom Learning Academy (CLA) Open House in Truckee from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 21. CLA employs a highly personalized approach to education, offers national standard-based curriculum tailored to the individual needs of each student and is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

A group of local religious leaders will discuss lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues Thursday, March 1 at 7:00 p.m. at the BRIC, 108 East
Telegraph Street, Carson City, NV. The format is a panel discussion and each panelist will share about their denomination’s stance on LGBT persons. A question and answer session will follow. The public is invited to attend.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency will conduct travel surveys with visitors and residents at several recreational and commercial locations throughout the Basin beginning this Friday, February 24. The interviewing, to be carried out by a professional survey research company, is scheduled to take place through Sunday, March 4. Surveyors will wear badges while patrolling survey sites. Results from the Travel Mode Survey will be used to track the success of and help plan multi-modal travel options around Lake Tahoe.

Navy League Carson City Council Meeting. 5:30PM- 8:30PM, Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at Gold Dust West Hotel and Casino, 2171 Hwy 50 East, Carson City. The social hour is at 5:30PM, followed by a buffet dinner at 6:30PM. Speaker for the evening will be Associate Chief Justice of the Nevada State Supreme Court, Michael A. Cherry. Justice Cherry will talk about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PSTD) and related legal issues facing our military member when they return home.

Girl Scouts is celebrating their 100th year anniversary and the Carson City Girl Scouts are putting on a Birthday Bash! The bash is on Monday, March 12th at the Carson Mall from 6:30pm – 7:30pm. This event is for all current and former Girl Scouts and active or retired military personnel.

An evening to benefit The Greenhouse Project takes place Wednesday, Feb. 22, beginning at 6 p.m. at Café at Adele’s.
The event is limited to 80 attendees. Each will receive a glass of wine and tastings from the three new menus offered by Charlie Abowd, chef and owner of the establishment.
“We’re showcasing selections from the breakfast, lunch and dinner menus,” said Karen Abowd, project president. “This is an opportunity for the community to see the changes we’ve made at Café at Adele’s, to enjoy an evening of fantastic food and support the work of The Greenhouse Project.”

Grace Christian Academy hosts March 6 Open House

Grace Christian Academy will host a school-wide open house for prospective families from 5:00 – 7:00p.m. on Tuesday March 6.

GCA is a Kindergarten through 8th Classical Christian School. Christopher Perrin describes, “Classical education is a long tradition of asking questions and digging up answers, consulting others, then asking, seeking and finding once more.” The open house will offer attendees the opportunity to learn about classical education, tour the campus, and meet the school’s staff.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from persons interested in serving on the Redevelopment Authority Citizens Committee. There is one (1) opening for “Business Operator” or “Property Owner” from Redevelopment Area 2. The term shall expire in January 2014. (Refer to the attached map for Redevelopment Area 2.)

George Washington, American Hero

CARSON CITY, NEVADA-Carson City Library and the Carson City Historical Society will present Michael Thomas on Wednesday, February 22nd. Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. This program will examine the life of the Father of our Country, George Washington. It is the story of a gentleman farmer who was moved to action and service for his country when he was needed most. His life demonstrated the true meaning of the phrase “Duty, Honor, Country.”

Carson City is seeking applications from persons interested in serving on the Debt Management Commission. The Commission provides a cursory review of proposed bonded indebtedness, makes recommendations to the Board of Supervisors based upon statutory limits on Ad-Valorem, rates and tax caps, and establishes debt management policies. Meetings are held at least every August and February and may also meet at the call of the Chairman.

There is one (1) opening for a “Public-at-Large” to fill a one-year term, expiring January 2013.

Nv Shows announced today it is looking for chefs and vendors for the Rocky Mountain Oyster Fry in Virginia City. (Prize money will be awarded)
March 17, 2012 is the world famous Rocky Mountain Oyster Fry. Anyone who wishes to sign up to cook will be given 40 pounds of beef "fries" as part of their $100 application/permit fee. This event takes place on St. Patricks day so there will also be a fun parade at noon. Craft vendors, non profits and local companies are also invited to purchase a booth space.

It is time to welcome spring with a train trip, wine, food, and good friends aboard The V & T Wine Train, sponsored by the Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare Auxiliary! The train excursion will be held on Saturday, March 31st, departing Carson City Eastgate Depot at 10:00am for a trip through the Comstock to Virginia City. The Train will return to Carson City at 3:00pm. Tickets are $65.00 per person. Ticket includes: Wine, Cheese and Dessert to and from Virginia City. Lunch will be served at the Red Dog Saloon.

Millions Could Overlook Valuable Tax Credit

CARSON CITY, NEVADA-Millions of workers could overlook a special federal tax credit because they don't know about it. As a result, they could miss out on up to $5,751 extra in their federal income tax refunds through the Earned Income Tax Credit, or EITC. Last year, on average, the credit boosted refunds for eligible workers by $2,100.

An international celebration of science and humanity held on or around February 12, the day that Charles Darwin was born in 1809. Specifically, it celebrates the discoveries and life of Charles Darwin and expresses gratitude for the enormous benefits that scientific knowledge, acquired through human curiosity and ingenuity, has contributed to the advancement of humanity.
