Drive-thru Santa's Village at V&T Railway, Living Nativity, Carson Mall Craft Fair, K9 portrait fundraiser highlight weekend activities around Carson City

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. Several fundraisers, including the annual “Share Your Christmas” Food Drive will be available throughout the Carson City, Minden and Reno areas on Friday. You can visit the North Pole safely as part of a drive-thru Santa's Village experience at V&T Railway in Carson City, beginning Friday into the weekend. A living nativity scene will be featured at First United Methodist Church on Saturday and Sunday. Combined with train rides in Virginia City, the state capital will be buzzing with excitement. Read on for more information.

Safety guidelines for the state of Nevada have been enforced, so please make sure to wear a mask and practice safe social distancing.

Friday, December 11

Annual Share Your Christmas Drive-By Food Drive Hosted by KTVN (all day). 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. KTVN will host its annual Share Your Christmas Drive-By Food Drive this Friday, Dec. 11 with food drop-off locations in Carson City, Minden and Reno beginning at 6 a.m. and running until 6 p.m.The three donation drop off locations this year are the Governor's Mansion in Carson City, Carson Valley Inn in Minden and the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino in Reno.

Carson Mall Craft Fair, Santa Claus brings holiday spirit to Carson City
The annual holiday craft fair has taken up residence in the Carson Mall just in time for the season of giving, with health considerations in place. Shoppers are encouraged to come into the mall, where masks are required, to buy their holiday wares from over twenty local vendors.
Santa Claus will also be available for Christmas photos as well; appointments are required and are limited to five children or less per appointment. To sign up for a photo appointment with St. Nick, click here.
The vendors will be present every day from 10 a.m to 6 p.m., and as of Tuesday afternoon there are still vendor spaces available. Visit the North Pole safely with drive-thru Santa's Village at V&T Railway in Carson City, 5 p.m. Friday
Santa and Mrs. Claus, along with the jolly residents of the North Pole, will be putting on a dazzling and safe show this year with a drive-thru Santa's Village at the V&T Railway in Carson City. Within Santa's Village, located at the Eastgate Depot, revelers will find singing and dancing, an amazing light display, and the home of the jolliest man on earth! Holiday enthusiasts will be able to enjoy the fun from the comfort and safety of their own cars. Fun for all ages and group sizes, and vouchers are available as gifts! The event begins this Friday at 5 p.m. and runs Saturday and Sunday from 5 to 9 p.m. The event continues Dec. 18 through Dec. 24, from 5 to 9 p.m.

Candy Cane Express, Train of Lights steam up for the holidays in Virginia City (all day). The V&T’s traditional Candy Cane Express will also be running during the day at 11:30am, 1 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. The Train of Lights will be running at 5 and 6:30 p.m. starting Nov. 27 and running Friday and Saturday evenings through Dec. 20. All trains will be thoroughly disinfected between runs and set up at half capacity for social distancing. Masks are required. Tickets will be limited, so reservations are highly recommended.

Carson City Lion Club holds annual See's Candies fundraiser for visually impaired. The Lions are selling See’s Candies at two locations in Carson City. 10 a.m. at the Carson Mall. The candy trailer located across from the entrance to Costco will be open every day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and their booth in the Carson City Mall will be open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. They will be at those locations until Christmas Eve or until they sell out. The Lions are selling quite a variety of See’s Candies ranging in cost from $8 to $23 per box.

Drive-In Movie Night at Connected Yaz Parking Lot. 5:45 p.m. at 1380 E. 5th Street in Carson City. Join us for a movie in the Connected Naz parking lot. Gates will open at 5:45PM with the movie starting at 6:00PM. There will be hot chocolate and candy canes available for all that attend.

Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space host holiday hike. 11 a.m. ‘Tis the season for a fun outdoors holiday adventure. Join us for our annual Holiday Hike at Silver Saddle Ranch this Saturday, Dec. 12 at 11 a.m. We will hike around and learn about the history of the Holidays. This hike will be socially distanced, and everyone is required to wear a mask. We can’t wait to see you there!

Crazy Cat Dog Grooming, Projections Photography team up for Christmas photo fundraiser with Carson City K9 Unit. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 4630 US Hwy 50 E. Crazy cat dog grooming and projections for tography is hosting a canine fundraiser in the name of the Carson canine project. The carson canine project was established in 2019 to raise money for the Carson City sheriff's department canine unit, Our mission is to unite the community and our local law enforcement, we strive to create commumity awareness and educate the population on what our K9 unit does for the community. In this time of uncertainty developing relationships between law enforcement and community is much needed.

While staying at the enchanting Renaissance recently, I had a view of the Truckee River, and a half dozen homeless folks dwelling there on her silent shores. They pretty much kept to themselves until a gregarious gentleman came along with something to eat that he passed out to one after another until they were all up and around on the riverbank, bargaining and trading with what little they had to offer. This was quite possibly their main meal for the day, and they were exhibiting great gladness in celebrating it.

Rabbits are overrunning our property. Initially, it was cute to see tiny bunnies. While cottontails only live 12 to 15 months, they can have two to six litters per year, each with five to six young. They only have a 28-to-29-day gestation period, and females breed again within hours of giving birth.

After several years of set backs due to the economy, the Sierra Flats Affordable Housing project is finally opening with a ribbon cutting July 9, providing 80 new rent controlled units to the capital city.

There are two portions of the project, a building for seniors and a building for family and workforce housing, each containing 40 units.
