Salary Cut Proposal Passed Over at Board of Regents Meeting
The Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents decided to not consider Regent Mark Alden’s proposal to reduce the salaries of university staff during its meeting last week. Instead, the board focused on increasing student fees and cutting programs.
Alden, who left the meeting early after hearing that his proposal would not be discussed or voted on, said he did not expect to gain much support on his proposal and even if the pay cuts had been discussed, he probably would have been the only one to vote in favor of them.
“I’m isolated, officially. I knew I would be,” Alden said. “The direction of the board is going to be the same as that of government: expand the government, don’t cut salaries and raise taxes. That’s the same thing we’re doing here: don’t reduce payroll and increase student fees.”
Neither Chairman James Leavitt, who Alden said was responsible for deciding not to discuss his proposal, nor Chief Executive Officer Scott Wasserman could be reached for comment.
The board voted to increase student fees in such areas as UNLV’s schools of Law and Dental Medicine, and UNR’s School of Medicine, along with voting for general across-the-board budget reductions for 2010. Budget reductions for 2011 will be discussed in the upcoming Board of Regents meeting on June 3-4.
