Comment on Nevada is greening…slowly by dhataway
In all seriousness, consideration should be given to the nuclear. The city I managed in Colorado had an electric utility. Once while attending a national electrical conference I heard a presentation by a representative from the French nuclear regulatory agency. During the Q&A he was asked why were the French so far ahead of the U.S. (at the time approx. 25% for the French versus 5% for the U.S.). His answer was that you Americans what to be perfect in the design that will never fail whereas we French design for all known environmental situations and then build. Today some 30 years later, the French are meeting between 75 and 80% of demand with nuclear versus around 20% for the U.S. They also recycle their wastes. It just goes to show how powerful the environmental in concert with the coal and petroleum lobbys are in this country.
Ninoinreno mentioned the amount of land that would be required for solar versus coal. The numbers are correct but the same area for a nuclear facility would be far less polluting. Further, the 8,500 acres of solar would only produce a fraction of a nuclear plant on 100 +/- acres.
