Western Nevada College Softball faced Snow College Friday for a doubleheader at Pete Livermore Sports Complex in Carson City. With the wind blowing out, home runs seemed to be in the cards, and the Wildcats were dealing them. In game one, WNC put four out of the park to come out on top of the Badgers, 12-6. Noa Talia blasted two home runs to help the Wildcats take the second game, 12-9.

While his batting average has languished for most of the season, Western Nevada College sophomore catcher Sam Salyers' work ethic has not.

Extra batting practice paid off for Salyers on Friday afternoon as his two-run single was the difference in the Wildcats' 3-2 baseball victory over Utah State University Eastern at John L. Harvey Field in Carson City.

The changing of the monthly guard is happening. The first of May is Sunday and Mother’s Day is just around the corner. Music, theater, sports, shopping and more will be abundant in the valley this weekend, so make sure to take a good look at this weekend’s list for all of your fun options.

Sierra Nevada College is pleased to announce it will join the University of Nevada, Reno; UNLV, College of Southern Nevada; Great Basin College; Nevada State College; University of Nevada School of Medicine; Western Nevada College; and Truckee Meadows Community College in a grant-funded National Institutes of Health program to develop infrastructure for health-related research and STEM education in the state of Nevada.

The weekend has arrived, and it is packed with things to do. Pull on your cowboy boots and head out to the Cowboy Festival in Genoa. Head out to the ballfield: the WNC Wildcats softball and baseball teams are playing at home today and tomorrow. It’s the final weekend of the Proscenium Players production of Harvey; get ready for a great show. Don't miss several opportunities this week to honor the most successful team members in the history of the Western Nevada College softball program. The Wildcats will hold their annual team banquet starting at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 30 at Gold Dust West casino in Carson City.

Ready for a great day, Carson City? It’s a day of beginnings all over the place. The new Italian restaurant, Angelina’s, inside the Carson Nugget is celebrating its Grand Opening all weekend. The annual Cowboy Festival in Genoa begins this afternoon and includes music, demonstrations, art exhibits, and more. Join the United Federal Credit Union for their ribbon cutting this afternoon, and enjoy live music and BBQ. Today is ‘Dining Out for Life,’ so head to Peg’s Glorified Ham and Eggs, Sassafras, or Adele’s to help raise funds for Northern Nevada Hopes.

THURSDAY:

Western Nevada College student leaders are serious about preventing sexual assault in our society. To bring awareness to the problem, they will lead a free public Sexual Assault Awareness Walk on Saturday, April 30, 10 am.

The 2.3 mile round-trip walk will begin in the parking lot just south of the Bully’s Restaurant at 3530 N. Carson St, at the intersection of U.S. Hwy 395 and West College Parkway in Carson City.

What to do on a Wednesday? The tiny little town of Silver City on the way to Virginia City has an amazing arts community: resident artist Scott MacLeod has his final sculpture workshop this afternoon: the found object ship he’s building is incredible. Feed your soul and your belly with music and great food at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint or Living the Good Life. Sing your heart out with J and M Productions at Crossroads Lounge’s karaoke night. Let some classic cinema into your life with a big screen viewing of ‘On the Waterfront’ at the Galaxy Theater.

WEDNESDAY:

Welcome to Tuesday, Carson City. Dance yourself through the evening with Country Line Dance at Carson Lanes, or if you prefer a big band sound, a beginning lesson in swing dance is at El Charro Avita. Get a good view of our valley from the Kings Canyon Trail with today’s Parks and Rec Easy Walk. The Clear Creek Bowman have started up Tuesday Night Archery for the season, so head out to the range and let a few arrows fly.

TUESDAY:

Join the Associated Students of Western Nevada during a Sexual Assault Awareness Walk Saturday, April 30. The walk begins at 10 a.m.

We will meet and begin on the side of the Bully's parking lot (3530 N Carson St, Carson City, NV 89706) and then continue to walk up W. College Parkway all the way up to Western Nevada College (1.5 miles) where we will have speakers along with refreshments for all who attend.

Years from now Western Nevada College baseball fans will say they watched DJ Peters play when he was in Wildcat blue and white uniform.

As his Major League Baseball draft stock continues to rise during his sophomore season, Peters ascended the Wildcat record book with his 13th home run of the season on Sunday at John L. Harvey Field in Carson City.

Are you ready for Monday? Grab the kids and hit the lanes for some Family Day bowling at Carson Lanes. Walking with ponies at the Littlest Things if fun for all ages. El Charro Avita is the place to be tonight; High Sierra Swing Dance Club hosts their weekly ‘night out,’ and will teach you something new before the open dancing begins. Downtown may be dusty, but the businesses along Carson Street still need our love. Check out karaoke at the Firkin and Fox, and don’t forget to peruse their new menu that debuts today.

MONDAY:

We know better than trying to predict springtime weather in the Sierra foothills. A new wave of showers is expected Monday, but it could show up whenever it likes. Rain or shine, Earth Day in Reno’s Idlewild Park is always fun and informative. See Marlon Brando on the big screen as Galaxy Theater offers two showings of ‘On the Waterfront.’ The Carson City Symphony welcomes guest soloist, Albert Lee, to the stage during today’s Spring Fling Concert.

SUNDAY:

Into every life a little rain must fall, and we just got plenty. The tulips and lilac blooming around town will be pleased. Unfortunately, it could make for soggy feet if you’ve got any outdoor activities planned. Lucky for us, plenty of fun can be found indoors. Hit the Carson Mall for Cowgirls and Lipstick or learn about rare coins at the Nevada State Museum. Meet author Joe Crowley at Browsers' Corner Book Store or read to therapy dogs at the Carson City Library. Kristina George has Colorado Northwestern's number. The Western Nevada College sophomore pitcher of Carson City blanked the Spartans for the second time this season, 6-0, in the opener of a four-game Scenic West Athletic Conference softball series on Friday in Rangely, Colo.

Today has a lot going for it. Food Truck Friday is the theme of the new United Federal Credit Union’s Grand Opening week: you can find them across the street from Mill’s Park on Williams St. Earth Day weekend kicks off at Western Nevada College with a Gem and Mineral Sale during the day, followed by a presentation by World Renowned Scientist: Dr. Charles Goldman in Marlette Hall at 7 p.m. Break a leg to the cast of ‘Harvey.’ The Procenium Players open their two weekend run at the Brewery Arts Center’s Black Box Theater tonight.

FRIDAY:

Thank goodness we are only two months from the first day of summer; spring is such an unpredictable season. Blustery today, rainy tomorrow, the threat of some snow in a few days. Take advantage of a nice day whenever it appears. Bike night at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar is one way to do that.

Western Nevada College and Colorado Northwestern Community College will move the start of their four-game baseball series to Saturday because of rain in the forecast.

With weather forecasters predicting a 70 percent chance of rain in Carson City on Friday, the games were moved back to the weekend.

Today may be the perfect day for a hike to the Kings Canyon Waterfall: join the Parks and Rec. Easy Walk at 9 a.m. to join in. If you’re looking for something indoors, the Spring has Sprung Art Show at the Nevada Artists Association Gallery at the Brewery Arts Center is overflowing with color. The Clearcreek Bowman have started up their Archery Shoots for the season: free for kids 17 and under, and only $5 for those older. Dance the night away with Country Line Dance Lessons at the Eleventh Frame Lounge in Carson Lanes.

TUESDAY:

Celebrate Earth Day with one of the world’s important climate scientists, Dr. Charles Goldman. He will speak about Lake Tahoe and a world water crisis from climate warming of inland waters.

The event is sponsored by the Western Nevada College Foundation. It will be held Friday, April 22, 7 pm at Marlette Hall at the Carson City campus.

Charles R. Goldman is a Distinguished Professor of Limnology ­­ Emeritus Department of Environmental Science and Policy UCD President, World Water and Climate Foundation who is known around the world.

The weekend has rushed by again, but Carson City still offers plenty o’ fun. The new United Federal Credit Union is offering up free Dunkin Donuts this morning as part of their weeklong Grand Opening Celebration. Take a walk with the furry friends at the Littlest Things: ponies and pooches need exercise, too. Carson Cigar Company is the place for laughs: Heads Up is today’s choice for their new game night. Call Eric Flores an opportunist. The Western Nevada College freshman first baseman has made the most of his part-time role with the Wildcats the spring.

On Saturday afternoon, Flores took advantage of a starting role, blasting a first-inning grand slam as WNC won the opening game of a Scenic West Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader against Salt Lake, 10-1, at John L. Harvey Field in Carson City.

Western Nevada College and Salt Lake Community College went 10 innings before WNC topped Salt Lake, 3-2, in game one of the weekend's four game series. Salt Lake is ranked fourth in the latest NJCAA poll, and have only lost four games this season. Pitcher Kristina George earned the win for the Wildcats.

After that cold snap earlier this week, it’s time to go enjoy the sunshine. Spend the afternoon cheering on the WNC Wildcats as they take on Salt Lake Community College. You’ll find the softball double-header at Livermore Sports Complex off Edmonds; baseball is played at the Harvey Field at Western Nevada College. He’s this month’s Sierra Nevada Forum speaker at the Brewery Arts Center. Buffalo Wild Wings is hosting a fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Club today; a delicious fundraiser, at that. Let the jazz take you away at Living the Good Life or at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint.

WEDNESDAY:

Happy Anniversary, Mile High Jazz Band. Every second Tuesday they play a concert at Comma Coffee, and have for fifteen years. Help them celebrate. Grab your dancing shoes and head to Carson Lanes and learn some country line dancing. Kids won’t want to miss Craft Day at the Carson City Library: all supplies are free and waiting. It’s an evening of illusion at the Brewery Arts Center. Be dazzled and help raise funds for the Carson Middle School Band Program.
