Carson City School District is hosting a Community Sustainability Night Thursday, May 16, 5-7 p.m., at Empire Elementary School, 1260 Monte Rosa. Families and members of the community are invited to come celebrate initiatives and partnerships for sustainable practices.

Eight Carson City restaurants join the Green Dining District on Carson Street

The nonprofit organization greenUp!, which provides environmental education to businesses, announced Wednesday that it has eight restaurants so far that will be part of the Green Dining District pilot program on Carson Street in Carson City.

Nevada jobs in February up over year, unemployment dips to 4.3 percent

Employment in Nevada declined by 900 jobs over the month but is up 48,400 jobs over the year, the largest annual increase seen in February since 2006, according to a report released Wednesday by the state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

Speakers from Waste Management, the City’s trash hauler, will provide insight into how trash is processed from the time of pick up to the disposal at the Carson City Landfill. As Carson City continues to grow, so does the trash problem. How long can the current landfill handle the growth?

Carson City residents to receive new streamlined recycling, green waste bins and a lower rate

Thanks to a negotiation between Waste Management and the Carson City Board of Supervisors, capital city residents will find a lowered rate for garbage collection, with additional carts for single stream recycling and green waste such as non-food organics and plant matter.

Waste Management responds to Telegraph trash allegations, says no contact was ever made by businesses

It was alleged today that Carson City's Waste Management has policies that are causing a trash build-up on Telegraph Square, but Waste Management Representative Kendra Kostelecky says that simply is not the case.

"For commercial businesses, we will come and take your trash every day of the week if that’s what you want,” said Kostelecky. “And we absolutely will provide businesses with as many bins as they want. We’re a business, we don’t have any policy that states we would only provide one bin to restaurants. In fact, we have many businesses that we do pick-ups for multiple times a week.”

Telegraph Square is too trashy, downtown Carson City businesses at a loss

Telegraph Square in downtown Carson City is growing quickly. Not only are new businesses like Gather, The Martin Hotel and Squeeze-In taking up space, but apartments are being renovated and rented out on the upper floors of the buildings.

However, with the area gaining more traffic and business, it also means there is an increase in waste, which has been piling up in the district for nearly half a year.

Christmas tree recycling locations offered throughout northern Nevada

CARSON CITY — Since 2001, more than 350,000 trees have been recycled throughout Nevada thanks to the help of several Christmas tree recycling programs, thousands of volunteers, and many community sponsors.

Carson City restaurant pilot project to involve 30 eateries wins recycling program grant

The Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Division of Environmental Protection’s Recycling Program has awarded grants to six Nevada organizations, including a Carson City pilot project involving 30 restaurants.

Grants amounting to $50,000 available for Nevada recycling projects

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection’s Recycling Program has $50,000 in grant funding available for projects to increase recycling, public awareness of the importance of conserving natural resources and for the reduction, reuse and recycling of solid waste.
