Carson City School District is hosting a Community Sustainability Night Thursday, May 16, 5-7 p.m., at Empire Elementary School, 1260 Monte Rosa. Families and members of the community are invited to come celebrate initiatives and partnerships for sustainable practices.

The nonprofit organization greenUp!, which provides environmental education to businesses, announced Wednesday that it has eight restaurants so far that will be part of the Green Dining District pilot program on Carson Street in Carson City.

Employment in Nevada declined by 900 jobs over the month but is up 48,400 jobs over the year, the largest annual increase seen in February since 2006, according to a report released Wednesday by the state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

Thanks to a negotiation between Waste Management and the Carson City Board of Supervisors, capital city residents will find a lowered rate for garbage collection, with additional carts for single stream recycling and green waste such as non-food organics and plant matter.

Good day Carson City, it is Monday, Jan. 7, 2019. After snow and wind blew into the capital city Sunday and overnight, we are looking at clearing but breezy skies in time for today's inauguration on the capitol grounds. Today is also the first day of classes for Carson City School District after winter break. As of the time of this writing, no delays have been announced.

It was alleged today that Carson City's Waste Management has policies that are causing a trash build-up on Telegraph Square, but Waste Management Representative Kendra Kostelecky says that simply is not the case.

"For commercial businesses, we will come and take your trash every day of the week if that’s what you want,” said Kostelecky. “And we absolutely will provide businesses with as many bins as they want. We’re a business, we don’t have any policy that states we would only provide one bin to restaurants. In fact, we have many businesses that we do pick-ups for multiple times a week.”

Telegraph Square in downtown Carson City is growing quickly. Not only are new businesses like Gather, The Martin Hotel and Squeeze-In taking up space, but apartments are being renovated and rented out on the upper floors of the buildings.

However, with the area gaining more traffic and business, it also means there is an increase in waste, which has been piling up in the district for nearly half a year.

CARSON CITY — Since 2001, more than 350,000 trees have been recycled throughout Nevada thanks to the help of several Christmas tree recycling programs, thousands of volunteers, and many community sponsors.

As we head into the final day of the holiday season, Carson City once again offers Christmas tree recycling in cooperation with Capital Sanitation and Waste Management.

The Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Division of Environmental Protection’s Recycling Program has awarded grants to six Nevada organizations, including a Carson City pilot project involving 30 restaurants.

Following are all of the entries for the 2018 Nevada Day Parade, to take place on Saturday, Oct. 27 starting at 10 a.m. The parade starts at North Carson and William streets, and ends at South Carson and Stewart streets. There are 215 entries in this year's parade.

Carson City Supervisor Brad Bonkowski will hold his monthly Breakfast with Brad this Friday, Sept. 7, from 7 to 8 a.m. at the Cracker Box restaurant.

Bonkowski encourages any resident with ideas, questions or concerns about city issues to join him for coffee and conversation.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection’s Recycling Program has $50,000 in grant funding available for projects to increase recycling, public awareness of the importance of conserving natural resources and for the reduction, reuse and recycling of solid waste.

Carson City Ward 2 Supervisor Brad Bonkowski will hold “Breakfast with Brad” on Friday, August 3, from 7 to 8 a.m. at the Cracker Box restaurant. All Carson City residents are welcome to attend. Bonkowski holds the get togethers to give residents an opportunity to get involved and be heard.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors voted Thursday to approve a request for proposals in the formation of a new franchise agreement for solid waste and recyclable materials disposal.

American flags will be planted at the grave sites of veterans and fallen military Friday as part of Memorial Day observations in Carson City.

The Nevada Department of Conservation & Natural Resources’ Division of Environmental Protection’s (NDEP) Recycling Program has awarded grants to five organizations throughout the State.

CARSON CITY — In recognition of Earth Day on April 22, the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection’s Recycling Program is helping to educate Nevada communities about the threats posed by “plastic pollution” throughout the state, and how to lessen the impact of plastic pollution to Nevada’s unique natural environment.

The Board of Supervisors on Thursday decided on the basic requirements for Carson City's next waste management services contract.

The current solid waste management contract for trash and recycle collection services, will be expiring in 2019. The City will be issuing a Request for Proposals (RFP) in early summer of 2018 seeking competitive proposals for collection services.
