Carson City area hunger drive: Can-Struction Challenge yields more than thousand pounds of food

Carson City locals who believe in taking care of families for a Greater Good pulled through again. Among Bureau of Reclamation, U.S. Geological Survey and USDA Rural Development, 1,042 pounds of food was collected for Carson City area nonprofits Ron Wood Family Resource Center and Friends in Service Helping as part of the Can-Struction Challenge.

The Feds Feed Families Food Drive kicked it up a notch this year with the CAN-Town Construction Challenge! US Bureau of Reclamation, US Geological Survey and USDA Rural Development all participated by building CAN-Projects.

USDA Rural Development will hold a workshop June 11 in Carson City on its Value Added Producer Grant designed to help Nevada farmers, ranchers and food entrepreneurs learn about the program and whether they wish to apply for grants funds. Nationwide more than $30 million is available to fund the grants.

Registration open for Nevada Economic Development Conference May 19-21

The Nevada Economic Development Conference, Stronger Economies Together 2015, will be held May 19 through 21, 2015 at the Joe Crowley Student Union on the University of Nevada, Reno campus. Registration is open.

At least 350 business community leaders, policy makers and government officials from throughout the region are expected to attend.

Diane Arvizo Joins Nevada Rural Housing Authority

After serving as the Single Family Housing Specialist at USDA Rural Development, Diane Arvizo joins Nevada Rural Housing Authority as Director of Homebuyer Services. In her new role, Arvizo will work on NRHA’s Home at LastTM program, building strong strategic partnerships and providing homebuyers with financial education.

Arvizo brings to the job a diverse background in real estate, financing, loan servicing, and community development, as well as an A-to-Z understanding of the home buying process.

Deadline for Rural Business Development Grant is May 15

USDA Rural Development Nevada is reminding rural nonprofits, public bodies and Tribes that the deadline to apply for USDA's new Rural Business Development Grant is May 15.

Grant money can be used to acquire or develop land, buildings, plants and equipment; build or improve access roads, parking areas, utility extensions and water and waste disposal facilities; provide technical assistance, establish revolving loan funds and to support rural distance learning programs that provide educational or job training.

Nevada Rural Housing Authority hosts free Home Buyer’s Expo

The Nevada Rural Housing Authority is hosting a free Homebuyer’s Expo on Saturday, April 18, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Bonanza Room at the Nugget, 1100 Nugget Ave, Sparks.

The Expo is designed to educate prospective homeowners on the process of purchasing a home and ways to prepare for homeownership down the road. There will be presenters from NRHA, USDA Rural Development, Financial Guidance Center, lenders and more.

These low interest federal loans provide options for a community to finance projects over a longer term.

USDA grant funds available for rural broadband

USDA Rural Development State Director Sarah Adler has announced that USDA is taking applications for Fiscal Year 2015 Community Connect Program grants. The program provides grants to establish essential broadband services in rural communities where it is currently not available.

“Many rural communities in Nevada do not have access to broadband,” said Adler. “USDA’s Community Connect Grant Program ensures that rural residents have the ability to run businesses, get the most from their education, and benefit from the infinite services that fast, reliable broadband provides.”

USDA program Invests $987 million in rural Nevada loans since 2009

More than $161 million was invested in rural Nevada in 2014 by the Department of Agriculture's Rural Development agency to support housing, business and community facilities. Since 2009, the rural agency has provided more than $987 million to strengthen rural Nevada’s families and communities.

Carson City cheese maker among USDA grant recipients in Northern Nevada

Tahoe Cheese Company of Carson City is one of three area food producers to receive federal grant money to expand production and market their Northern Nevada products, the USDA announced Thursday. McCleary Ranch, north of Carson City in Washoe County and the Frey Ranch Estate Distillery of Fallon were also approved for Value-Added Producer Grants.

First Nevada Governor’s Conference on Agriculture set in November

The inaugural Nevada Governor’s Conference on Agriculture will be Nov. 13 at the Atlantis Casino Resort and Spa in Reno, the Nevada Department of Agriculture announced Wednesday.

“I am pleased to announce the very first Nevada Governor’s Conference on Agriculture,” said Gov. Brian Sandoval. “Agriculture is one of Nevada’s leading industries, contributing more than $3 billion to the state’s economy. This includes our rich and diverse agricultural industries, from ranching and farming to all the associated businesses that keep these industries vibrant.”

USDA offers June 12 workshop for small business, ag producers applying for energy grants

USDA Rural Development will hold a workshop June 12 to help rural small businesses and agricultural producers apply for the federal Rural Energy for America Program funds.

The workshop will be conducted via video teleconference from 9-11:30 a.m. at Cooperative Extension offices in Carson City, Ely, Eureka, Yerington, Caliente and at the Logandale Office. USDA Rural Energy Coordinator Mark Williams will lead the training from the Carson City location to help applicants understanding the REAP application process.

Grants of $11.9 million approved go to Lyon County for septic tank project near Dayton

Lyon County has been awarded $11.9 million in grant and loan funds through USDA Rural Development Nevada to build a waste water collection system for nearly 500 users who are currently on septic tanks near Dayton. The project aims to reduce nitrate problems.

Food and clothing drives on Saturday to benefit Carson City families in need

A food drive that brings federal employees together to collect food for those hungry in Carson City will be held Saturday following a successful event last weekend that netted more than 700 pounds in donations. Also underway Saturday is a clothing drive for families in need at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The “Feds Feed Families” drive will have a booth and food drop-off area at Grocery Outlet, 1831 North Carson Street this Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

“Feds Feed Families” a food drive to benefit the hungry in our community has kicked off again for the summer. In Carson City, federal employees from USDA Rural Development, the Bureau of Reclamation, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Federal Highway Administration, and the U.S. Geological Survey will be volunteering and collecting donated food in front of Grocery Outlet, at 1831 N. Carson, on Aug. 3 and Aug. 10, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. each day. Grocery Outlet owner Dave Cox provides discounts on purchases for food drives.

USDA Invites Applications for Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grants

CARSON CITY — In early July Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that USDA is accepting applications for grants to provide access to education, training and healthcare resources in rural areas. Up to $17.5 million is available through the Department’s Distance Learning and Telemedicine (DLT) Grant Program, with individual awards up to $500,000.

Reid announces more than $5 million for Virginia City, Gold Hill wastewater upgrades

Nevada Senator Harry Reid today on Earth Day announced that USDA Rural Development has approved a loan of $3,002,000 and a grant of $2,312,794 to replace the wastewater treatment plant that serves the Virginia City and Gold Hill communities in Storey County. The existing plant is past its useful life.

USDA Gives Rural Nevada $240 Million Boost
