English Language Learners At-Home Program founder Florence Phillips received Nevada's highest volunteer honors with a lifetime recognition award for the all-volunteer, nonprofit Carson City-based program she established.

As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, Florence Phillips has taken her all-volunteer tutoring program for immigrants and refugees — English Language Learners In-Home Program — completely online over the last couple of months.

A Carson City-based nonprofit that teaches the English language to those preparing for U.S. citizenship — and whose founder was recognized in December 2018 as a finalist for the CNN Hero Award — has been picked to receive a national recognition award from the prestigious Manhattan Institute.

Each June, the Carson City Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors recognizes quality of life, community and economic growth achievements.

At the Chamber annual meeting on June 13, Chamber Chairman of the Board Robert Fredlund will honor seven individuals or businesses that personify what Mayor Robert Crowell is so often proud to state, “Carson City is a great place to live, work, and play.”

Pocket translators and Bibles are not the items most teenagers would dream about packing for a Spring Break trip. However, for 12 Carson City area high school students, these items, joined by hearts to serve, will be the most precious commodities needed for an adventure of a lifetime.

Recently, SkillsUSA had its Regional Photography Competition, and all five participating CHS students are going to State. SkillsUSA is a career and technical student organization serving more than 395,000 high school, college, and middle school students across the nation in trade training programs and technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations.

Learning a second language isn't as simple as sitting through classes and completing workbooks. Just ask clients at the United Latino Community (ULC) in Carson City, where learning a language is a shared experience and a common thread that binds people together.

We are located at 1711 N. Roop (corner of Roop and Beverly). We have many students waiting to learn English. You are needed! Instructional materials and training are provided at no charge. Neither teaching experience nor a foreign language are necessary. Commitment is 1.5-2 hours per week at your convenience.

I love living in Northern Nevada and have been an active community participant for several decades in the areas of advocacy targeting workability and job readiness for those families immigrating to our great state with the emphasis on English language acquisition and US citizenship. United Latino Community invites you to a free workshop this Wednesday, March 2 from 5:15pm to 6:45 pm at United Latino Community, 1711 N. Roop St.(corner of Roop and Beverly). Learn how to teach basic English to adults one-on-one. Materials and training are provided for free. The only requirement is that you speak, read, and write English. Neither experience, nor knowledge of a foreign language are necessary. Commitment is 1.5 to 2 hours each week at your convenience. Come help improve the life of an adult in our community. Hold on to your hats, Carson City, summer isn’t ready to quit us just yet. An aviation air show at the Minden Airport, the coin show and fair at the Nevada State Museum, and a fishing derby for the kids at Little Washoe Lake are only the tip of the iceberg. The Pavilion at Mills Park is where you’ll find the annual Carson High Football Boosters Fundraising BBQ. The Quicksilver Dog Agility Trials are always fun to watch, and they’ll be at Fuji Park all weekend. Carson Lanes has family fun indoors and out all day long during their Bowling Blast-off.

During the school year when schools are closed, parents of ESL school children living in Carson, Douglas and Washoe counties are also taking ESL classes for adults. When public schools are closed these adults will need English Conversation practice so they do not lose some of their skill.
