During the annual “State of the City” address Friday at Gold Dust West, Carson City’s Mayor Bob Crowell gave his last speech of its kind, as he is retiring at the end of this year.

The State of the City address is a way community members can be kept up to date on everything going on in our capital city, including achievements, challenges, and everything in between.

Updates included achievements such as the completion of the water pipeline from Douglas County to Carson City, the Complete Streets Project, Tesla’s grant for the Carson City School District, the first new park opening in 12 years, the opening of the Disc Golf course, and more.

Two potential school funding sources were introduced Tuesday in the Nevada Legislature. One — Senate Bill 545 — would take the 10% excise tax collected on legal marijuana sales and put it in the state’s public education account. Taxable sales increased 8.6 percent in April, totaling $4.95 billion. But Carson City didn't share in the wealth, instead reporting a 2.3 percent decrease in sales to $93.37 million.

The elections in November 2014 were a great surprise to many and shock to some. The people swept all Democrats out of the state-wide offices, reversed the majorities in both houses of the Legislature, and by a 4-to-1 margin defeated the "margin" tax. We the Republican base were looking forward to restoring long-overdue sanity at the State level.

City sales tax receipts are up, landfill revenues are down, and the mayor awaits Nevada's budget to see if city government's fiscal future in part stays a state hostage.

The developer chosen for the Carson Nugget Redevelopment Project will be on hand tonight to answer questions about the project.

Sales tax collections in Carson City plunged again in January, falling 16.2% from January of 2009. Sales tax collections statewide were down 8.1% in January. They were off 4.8% in Washoe County, down 2.2% in Douglas, minus 22% in Lyon and down 12.7% in the Fallon area.
