Hello fellow anglers, a lot of fishing going on around our area. But a word to this wise. Although we have had nice weather this last week, the higher mountain roads can be very dangerous if you are not paying attention. Just last week I drove up to Caples Lake to do some ice fishing and got caught ahead of a multi-vehicle crash near Kirkwood.

Are you ready for some football? Maybe you’re just a fan of the commercials. Either way, today is the big game between the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers. Carson City will be hopping with gridiron parties, beverages and hot wings at bars, restaurants, and casinos. Start the day with a pancake breakfast at the Elks Club. For those who aren’t a pigskin fan, consider playing a few rounds of bingo to benefit the Carson Animal Shelter Initiative.

Okay all you procrastinators, if you planned on making it to the Arlington Square Ice Rink, then today is your last chance. With a temperature around 50, it should be a perfect day to skate one last time. Show some Senator Pride tonight at the Community Center as 24 seniors compete for ‘Mr. Carson High.’ There’s a lot going on this weekend, so take a look at the list and go have some fun.

SATURDAY:

It’s only Thursday, but I expect that you have one eye on the weekend. Super Bowl, the wine walk, and the Carson High Safe Grad 5K are just around the corner. Get a jump on the fun with some karaoke at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar, line dancing at Beercade, or music at Living the Good Life. Congratulations to the amazing kids waiting to be honored tonight at the Boys and Girls Club Annual Awards Celebration.

February 7 is best known as ‘Super Bowl Sunday’ and there are plenty of parties going on around town to help you cheer for your favorite team. The Denver Broncos square off against the Carolina Panthers at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, CA. Kickoff for Super Bowl 50 is at 3:25 p.m. and will air on CBS. Coldplay, Beyonce and Bruno Mars are scheduled to perform in this year’s halftime show.

I’ve compiled a list of where you can go to watch the game, and who’s throwing a party.

Who do you want to see in the Super Bowl? Cheer on your favorite Sunday as the New England Patriots battle Denver and the Carolina Panthers take on the Arizona Cardinals. Sunny skies make for a perfect day for ice skating at Arlington Square Ice Rink in downtown Carson City. Feeling creative? Grab the kids and head to Van Gogh and Vino for an all-ages painting party.

SUNDAY:

STATELINE — Sports stars and celebrities worked out the kinks from tee to green Tuesday during the opening practice round of the American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course at Lake Tahoe.

Among the headliners to warm up and sign autographs at the famed Tahoe South course were defending 2014 champion Mark Rypien, retired New York Yankees pitcher Roger Clemens, American Olympic soccer star Brandi Chastain and first-timer Justin Timberlake.

There’s one place where NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB rivalries meet annually to settle old scores. The venue: Lake Tahoe. The event: The American Century Championship. At stake: a share in the $625,000 prize purse. The scene: Six days of fist bumps, high fives, autograph signing, photos with fans, laughs galore and some great golf.

A blockbuster lineup of sports legends, all-stars, Olympians and hall of famers plus Hollywood celebrities of film and television will go tee to green July 14-19 at the 26th American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Club.

Gaming Control Board Chairman A.G. Burnett said "unaudited figures show a sports book win of $3,261,066 was recorded on wagers totally $115,986,086. The resulted in a hold percentage of 2.8 percent."

Be this year’s MVD — Most Valuable Driver — by being the designated driver on Super Bowl Sunday. The Carson City Sheriff’s Office in cooperation with Joining Forces and the Office of Traffic Safety have provided a limited number of water and cola Koozies to be given to those who choose to be designated drivers during the game.

They are designed in the shape of a football jersey and have been stamped with the MVD and Zero Fatalities Logo.

There are a few big questions to ask yourself this weekend. Patriots or Seahawks? Where are you going to watch the game? And who is going to have the best commercial? Just remember to be safe on game day and have a designated driver handy.

Speaking of sports, sign-ups are going on Saturday for Little League, AYSO, and the Sierra Nevada Football League. Spring is almost upon us without ever really giving us a decent taste of winter.

Super Bowl weekend is here, and so is some great music around town. Stereo Galaxy will be jamming downtown at the Westside Pour House. The Brewery Arts Center presents Mig O’Hara as the first installment of their new Nevada Songwriters Series. And local band Iron Age will be filmed at their gig tonight in the 11th Frame Lounge at Carson Lanes for a ‘rock-umentary.’ Where ever you end up tonight, you’re bound to have a good time.

Super Bowl Sunday is coming up and as always there will be celebrations and parties throughout the country. Here in Carson City there will also be many places where you and your friends will meet to watch the game and cheer on your favorite team.

Also present will be plenty of food and for many of you, adult beverages. During events such as these, people have a tendency to over indulge and lose track of just how much alcohol they have consumed.

Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 1, at 3pm, Mallards Restaurant will be hosting a Superbowl Party and all-you-can-eat buffet. The game begins at 3:30, but get there early for good seats. Please call 775-885-1019 for reservations. The restaurant is located at the Empire Ranch Golf Course, 1875 Fair Way; turn south onto Empire Ranch Road from Highway 50 East, then left onto Clubhouse.

Jim Harbaugh will in all likelihood be coaching his final game as the head coach of the 49ers on Sunday. He wasn’t all the problem, but more so a part of the problematic puzzle the organization has at the moment. The 49ers have a GM in Trent Baalke who is a hard headed, competitive guy, and seems to refuse to work with someone who is the same way (Jim Harbaugh).

Here is the latest fishing report for rivers, lakes and streams in Nevada and Northern California. This report is for the week of Feb. 5-11, 2014.

The state's Gaming Control Board released figures Monday showing that $119.4 million was wagered in Nevada's 183 sports books on this year's Super Bowl, a record. The sports book recorded an unaudited win of $19,673,960, a hold percentage of 16.5 percent.

It is that time of year again ... the Super Bowl! As with many sports related events we find ourselves celebrating the victory or drowning our sorrows in loss. In either case, if you are going to be partaking in alcoholic beverages, don’t drink and drive.

David Michael Grimes, 33, was sentenced in Carson City District Court Tuesday to the maximum sentence for voluntary manslaughter in a Feb. 3, 2013 shooting outside a Washington Street home following a Super Bowl Sunday party.

A 23-year-old Carson City woman faces murder charges following the death of an 18-month-old toddler, Justin Watson, in November 2012.

Brittany Michelle Paugh turned herself into the Carson City Sheriff's Office Thursday. She is being held without bail. Charges include first degree murder, child abuse, child abuse causing death, second degree murder with child neglect and child abuse with substantial harm. The toddler died of significant trauma to the brain.

Sheriff Ken Furlong said the arrest came after an extensive investigation that involved medical specialists outside the state.

One of the all-time greats of the San Francisco 49ers, three-time Super Bowl champion Roger Craig will serve as the keynote speaker at the 45th annual Governor’s Dinner in July, the Nevada athletics department announced Tuesday.

The dinner is set for July 12 at the Governor’s Mansion in Carson City. Proceeds from the Governor's Dinner benefit student-athlete scholarships at the University of Nevada.

A Dayton man has been ordered to stand trial on a murder charge stemming from a shooting death in Carson City that authorities said could have been fueled by drinking during the Super Bowl.

Not since Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction during Super Bowl XXXVIII’s halftime show have undergarments caused such a national fuss. And now it carries over to Carson City.
