Northern Nevada veterans will have the opportunity this coming weekend to speak out about issues and concerns important to them during a Nevada Veterans Legislative Symposium.

In an effort to address social and emotional needs of students, CHS is presenting the SOS (Signs of Suicide) Prevention Program.

Freshman health classes were the first reached in February. The JROTC students and health science classes are next.

Carson City walkers take to street Saturday for suicide prevention

Participants in the 5K Walk for Suicide Prevention walk through downtown Carson City Saturday morning to help raise awareness about suicide. Partnership Carson City, the Nevada Coalition for Suicide Prevention and the Nevada Office of Suicide Prevention co-host the event to educate the community about resources available for people suffering from depression and suicidal thoughts, as well as give support for their families.

Partnership Carson City is teaming up with the Nevada Coalition for Suicide Prevention and the Nevada Office of Suicide Prevention for Carson City’s third 5K Walk for Suicide Prevention. The walk will be 10 a.m. Sept. 9, beginning at the Bob McFadden Plaza, 223 W. Third St.

More than 50 school emergency response team members and administrators from the Carson City School District received training for the school district's Emergency Operations Plan Thursday, Aug. 10, at Carson Middle School.

Lyon and Storey Coalition Hosts Speakers from Foster Care Recruitment and Mobile Crisis Response Team

The Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties will have 3 guest speakers for their February breakfast meeting. The meeting is on Thurs February 9th at 9am at the Silver Springs Community Center.

Speakers include Lori Nichols from Foster Care Recruitment, and Sally Hazard from the Fernley office for the Advanced Foster Care Program. They will explain the pressing need for foster homes in the Lyon and Storey County region, and offer ways to help increase the number of foster parents.

"Verne Horton, President of the Sierra-Tahoe Branch #137 of the veterans organization - The Fleet Reserve Association(FRA presented a check for $1050.00 to Debbie Posnien, Executive Director and Alisa Merino, Program Coordinator of the Suicide Prevention Network of Douglas County. The check was presented on behalf of the Branch and its Ladies Auxiliary Unit, whose members, together, hosted events raising the funds to aid the Network's efforts in preventing suicide through support, education and advocacy.

Carson City veteran named Nevada Veteran of the Month

A retired United States Marine gunnery sergeant has been named Nevada Veteran of the Month by the Nevada Office of Veterans Services (NOVS).

Frank Reynolds of Carson City was selected by nomination for his work serving fellow veterans both in the community and statewide.

Suicide Prevention Week culminates Saturday with the 10th annual "Walk in Memory, Walk for Hope" observances held in Carson City, Dayton, Gardnerville, Yerington, Fallon and nine communities statewide.

Nevada ranks 5th in the nation in its rate of suicide deaths. Suicide is the 8th leading cause of death in Nevada and the 10th leading cause of death in the United States with one suicide occurring on average every 12.3 minutes. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among Nevadans 15 to 34-year-olds, according to state health officials.
