Monday, May 30: Things to do in Carson City

Today we remember those who have fallen while defending our country. The Historic Stewart Cemetery on Snyder will feature a ceremony at 10 a.m. Lone Mountain Cemetery hosts a ceremony at 1 p.m. and the public is invited to help remove the several hundred flags that were placed on the graves of veterans at 4 p.m. Dayton Cemetery holds their service at 9 a.m. Enjoy a free bar-be-que at Evergreen Gene’s. Midnight Madness has descended upon the valley, bringing with it a 72 hour softball tournament at Centennial Park. Don’t be surprised to see more cyclists on the road: an unofficial pre-ride for Epic Rides is this weekend. Head to the Nevada State Railroad Museum to see the Glenbrook all steamed up. What a weekend. As the days get longer, the whole valley bustles. Monday has returned, but no fear, there is still fun to be found. Karaoke at Firkin and Fox is a great way to start off the week. Grab your dancing shoes and head to El Charro to learn some new moves with the High Sierra Swing Dance Club. Grab the kids for a night of board games at Nerdvana. For games meant for a more adult audience, the Carson Cigar Company hosts a weekly game night with drink specials for the players.

If you were looking for a lazy day, today might not be it. Carson City BMX welcomes moms to the track today; their Mother’s Day race was postponed due to the wet weather. Virginia City still has plenty of chili on the menu, in addition to their annual Fun with the Runs 5K. Gardeners will want to head to Douglas High School for the Future Farmers of America plant sale. Ready to have some fun? Virginia City’s Chili on the Comstock Cook-off goes on all weekend. For some healthier fare, hit up the Spring Farmers Market downtown. Go fly a kite at Dangberg Home Historic Park, just past Douglas High School on Highway 88; their ‘Something in the Wind’ Celebration is both Saturday and Sunday. Don’t forget to leave non-perishable food by your mailbox: the annual ‘Stamp Out Hunger’ food drive is today. Mother's Day, Sunday, May 8: Things to do around Carson City

Much love to the Mothers in our valley, and those that we love like Mothers. Treat that special lady to a day at the Carson Hot Springs. She gets to ride free with a child at the RSVP Spring Carnival. Travel to Virginia City and back on the historic Virginia and Truckee Steam Train. Brunch, bingo, and BMX racing are just a few of the other things that Sunday has to offer.

May day has come and gone, but just barely. This is my favorite time of year in Carson City: blooming flowers, warmer days, and the return of summertime activities. The Historic Carson Scavenger Hunt begins today, so head downtown and look for the unique features that make the buildings one of a kind. Mondays are perfect for getting out and starting the week off with some swing dancing with our local club, the High Sierra Swing Dancers. Firkin and Fox is a great place for food and drink, but tonight you can go and sing some songs with karaoke leaders J and M Productions.

Downtown may be dusty, but the businesses along Carson Street still need our love. Check out karaoke at the Firkin and Fox, and don’t forget to peruse their new menu that debuts today.

We know better than trying to predict springtime weather in the Sierra foothills. A new wave of showers is expected Monday, but it could show up whenever it likes. Rain or shine, Earth Day in Reno’s Idlewild Park is always fun and informative. See Marlon Brando on the big screen as Galaxy Theater offers two showings of ‘On the Waterfront.’ The Carson City Symphony welcomes guest soloist, Albert Lee, to the stage during today’s Spring Fling Concert.

Sunday is fun day. Get ready for springtime flowers with the Anniversary Sale at Greenhouse Garden Center. If you can’t wait for your own flora to grow, join a ranger at Washoe Lake State Park during their Wildflower Walk to the Deadman’s Creek gazebo. Let the little ones burn off some energy at the Carson Car Center’s Grand Opening: free hot dogs, hamburgers, and a bounce house make for a fun time.

Carson City officials will be on hand today at the Community Center to answer questions and explain what is on the budget for the upcoming fiscal year. While you’re there, take a good gander at the Great Basin Native Artists show on display in the Sierra Room.

Let someone else take care of Sunday breakfast. The Elks Club throws open its doors for their monthly pancake breakfast which runs today, Sunday, until 11 a.m.
Challenge someone to a mini tournament during Carson Lanes Breakfast and Bowl. You will not want to miss this month’s CASI Bingo day at the Senior Center. Someone will walk away with $1000. Let the Tibetan Monks teach you inner-peace at the Brewery Arts Center. Two workshops today are offered as part of the Sacred Arts of Tibet Tour.
