Fire up that grill, Carson City, we’ve got the perfect weather to kick off the summer. The early Farmers Market at Musser and Nevada offers the perfect finishing touches to any picnic or bar-be-que. It’s all aboard for train lovers: the V&T begins its runs to Virginia City this weekend and the historic Glenbrook Engine is all steamed up at the Railroad Museum. I’m not exactly sure what a ‘cupcake war’ is, but whatever the Carson Library has planned, it sounds delicious. Just make sure you register online to participate. Today is relatively quiet around town: we always have some great art exhibits to discover, but not too many planned events. DJ Trivia Night at Westside Pour House pits your smarts against other teams while surrounded by good food and drink. Jazz at Living the Good Life will put some swing in your step for the next few days.

It’s going to be gorgeous all weekend long, and there are plenty of ways to take advantage of the sunny weather. The Annual Cops and Kids Open House at the Carson City Sheriff’s Department is a family favorite with free food, activities, and games. Treasure hunters will be kept busy with the Genoa Community Garage Sale, as well as one encompassing the Saratoga Springs area of Johnson Lane. It looks like spring just skipped right by us this year. It took a while, but we’re finally on the upswing towards summer. Celebrate with some fresh produce from the first-of-the-season Sierra Chef Farmers Market in Gardnerville’s Lampe Park. ‘Explore Summer Programs’ at the Carson City Library will introduce you to some options for your kids during the long break. Muscle Powered invites you to participate in their ‘Ride of Silence’ to bring awareness to the importance of sharing the road; meet at Telegraph Square at 7 p.m., and don’t forget your helmet.

Sunday, Mother's Day: Things to do around Carson City and beyond

Pamper the special lady in your life with a soak at the Carson Hot Springs. It’s free for moms today, but fun for the whole family. If breakfast-in-bed isn’t the plan, head to the Douglas County Museum for the Lions Club’s annual pancake breakfast. Scoop the family up and find something to enjoy together. The annual RSVP Spring Carnival is an easy choice, but a round-trip to Virginia City on the historic V and T Steam Train is pretty memorable. Find something pretty for her garden at the Spring Plant Sale that the Greenhouse Project hosts each year. The evening will be just as nice Thursday, when the annual RSVP Spring Carnival opens at Mills Park. Head to Dayton for the next installment of this month’s Historical Society Lecture Series as Kay Winters reminisces on life as a farmer’s wife in the 1950s and 60s. Ev Musselman rocks the stage at the Max Casino and you’ll find John and Cherie Shipley leading the jazz jam at Living the Good Life.

Summer? Winter? Flip a coin. I could’ve guessed the rain was coming, my lilacs just started to bloom. Don’t let your parade get rained out though, downtown Carson will march right through this wet stuff. The early Spring Farmers Market debuts today behind Due Sorella at Nevada and Musser Streets. Grab the kids and enjoy today’s open house with free admission at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada. Stick around for the monthly Downtown Business Association wine walk and find something for Mothers’ Day at one of our wonderful local shops.

Hold on to your hat, the weekend is here. If it’s a cowboy hat, head over to Genoa for their annual Cowboy Festival. Plenty of free things to see, hear, and experience await. The annual Spring Earth Spirit Faire lets you celebrate Mother Earth with workshops, holistic practitioners, great vendors, and a raffle. It benefits the Heart to Heart School and Advocates to End Domestic Violence so it’s always worth checking out. Today has quite a bit going for it, hard to believe that it’s a Wednesday. Learn more about the Craft Brew industry in Nevada and how to support its growth at the ‘Free My Beer Festival’ at Fox Brewpub. Fritch Elementary School is the beneficiary of tonight’s ‘McTeacher’ Night fundraiser at the South Carson McDonalds; both drive-thru and dine-in orders count. It’s Red vs. Blue in the Morse Burley Gym at Carson High School. The traditional basketball game between Democrat and Republican legislators also raises money for local seniors.

Senator Square: CHS students to present Senior Projects

Carson High School students worked tirelessly over the previous eight months to prepare for Carson City community volunteers, many of them CHS graduates who completed the Senior Project themselves, to evaluate both their portfolios and their speeches to be delivered Saturday.

Holy moly, it’s going to be a busy weekend: busy and gorgeous out. A bowling tournament and the Comstock Shootout Soccer tournament have the hotels and motels busting at the seams. Celebrate Earth Day with Muscle Powered by making a small piece of Carson City that much cleaner; the trash meets at 8 a.m. and leaves you plenty of time to enjoy the day. Carson High School students are currently working with great intensity to fulfill their Senior Projects, a graduation requirement.

All those involved encourage students to pursue a personal interest, something to benefit others, or something to prepare themselves for their future.

Senator Square: Opportunity for CHS juniors, seniors to earn a bachelor's degree in two years

Coming Jan. 14 to Western Nevada College (WNC) is a series of proven methods which reduce college costs and get graduates a university degree in as few as two years.

A series of ten weekly classes is aimed toward college-bound high school juniors and seniors and their parents, as well as adults looking for career advancement.
