Sacred Arts of Tibet Tour

Tibetan monks from the Gaden Shartse Monastery will return to Carson City and South Lake Tahoe this month as part of their two-year tour of the United States.

During their Carson City visit, from Jan. 15-20, the monks will construct a Manjushri, also known as Buddha of Wisdom Sand Mandala.

You have one last chance to commune with the monks of India. There is a workshop at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Coincidentally the classic sci-fi movie, Alien, is playing at Galaxy Theater the same times. Get a glimpse inside the historic Wungnema house at the east end of Mills Park during the afternoon’s Open House.

Ready, set, crawl. The Brew Crew’s monthly pub crawl kicks off from the Laxalt Plaza next to the Nugget and includes up several downtown area taverns and restaurants. If your new year’s resolution includes volunteering, the Muscle Powered Trash Mob is a quick, but mighty, helping hand. Learn about the future of the Stewart Indian School Historic Site during an encore lecture at the Nevada State Museum. You’ll be ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ all weekend; Youth Theater Carson City’s final weekend of performances is sure to bring down the house. The Monks of the Gaden Shartse Monastery will teach a Tibetan Calligraphy and Butter Sculpture Workshop and hold a Vajravidarin Healing Ritual in the Brewery Arts Center today. FRIDAY, Jan. 19: Things to do in Carson City

Something wintery is on its way: prepare for a blustery afternoon and a rainy evening. But don’t let a little precipitation ruin your plans. The monks of the Gaden Shartse Monastery in South India will be visiting until Sunday and have several workshops and rituals in store. The Roska Collective is kicking up our downtown nightlife up a notch with a Tequila and Techno night at Battle Born Social. Sunni Frost and Cedric Williams are back on the Living the Good Life stage. Their vocals will turn an ordinary evening extraordinary.

The middle of the week can move slowly. Break the routine with something different. e Sacred Arts of Tibet Tour has returned to Carson City and brings a tea offering to the Brewery Arts Center. The CCAI exhibit in the Courthouse Gallery, ‘Wish You Were Here,’ by artist Susanne Forestieri, closes tomorrow. You won’t want to miss your chance to see her stunning work. Galaxy Theater brings a different flashback film to the big screen each week. Enjoy the exploits of Harry, Ron, and Hermione as they uncover the Chamber of Secrets.

WEDNESDAY, Jan. 17: Things to do in Carson City

Tibetan monks, on a two-year tour of the United States from the Gaden Shartse Monastery in India, will be visiting Carson City and South Lake Tahoe to share their unique and deeply spiritual culture of Tibetan Buddhism.

Are you itching for the weekend? It will be musically magical with a plethora of Jazz and Beyond Music Festival events throughout town. It’s a classic car lover’s dream come true, as well, with Hot August Nights in Reno and Sparks. But don’t get ahead of yourself, today has some great options for a good time. Enjoy some air conditioned entertainment with the Carolyn Dolan Band at the Carson Mall. ‘Elvis, Marilyn and the Space Aliens’ and their place in the movies is the topic of this month’s Douglas County Historical Society’s lecture.

It's going to be toasty today. Luckily, weekly Parks and Rec 'Easy Walk' starts at 8 a.m., so you'll be off the trail before the sun gets too far overhead. The Brewery Arts Center hosts the Carson City Classic Cinema Club the first Tuesday of each month; join them this evening for trivia and a showing of John Wayne's 'Stagecoach.' Dance the night away to the sounds of big band or cowboys: swing dance lessons are at El Charro Avita, while country line dancing can be found in the Eleventh Frame Lounge at Carson Lanes.

TUESDAY: Bike to Work Week

Keep an eye out for cyclists, Carson City. Bike to work week has begun, so please slow down and share the road. You’ll find a new exhibit in the CCAI Gallery at the courthouse, so check it out after you cast your early vote in the primary. The Sacred Arts of Tibet Tour has brought the monks of the Gaden Shartse Phukhang Monastery back to the Brewery Arts Center; today they’ll perform a tea offering and give a presentation on happiness. Negroni week kicks off today at the Firkin and Fox, but several local bars are participating in this fundraiser.

Hold onto your hats, Carson City, summer has arrived with a bang. Bikes, brews, bulls and broncs are just a few of the things you’ll find on this event summary. Whether you are looking for adult fun, family fun, art, music, shopping, or something outdoorsy, look no further: Carson City and her neighboring valleys are packed full of fun.

What a week. Granted, it was a short one, but school got out for the summer and we saw the weather go from a wintery chill to summery hot. Get your early primary vote in this afternoon, then stick around for the Artist Reception for the new exhibit in the CCAI Gallery upstairs in the Courthouse Building. Live music can be found at our bigger casinos, and a dj will keep you on the dance floor at Jimmy G’s, Alatte in the Carson Nugget, and Living the Good Life. Sassafras welcomes Bryan McPherson to the stage at 8 pm; you’ll want to get there earlier to take full advantage of their menu.

Let someone else take care of Sunday breakfast. The Elks Club throws open its doors for their monthly pancake breakfast which runs today, Sunday, until 11 a.m.
Challenge someone to a mini tournament during Carson Lanes Breakfast and Bowl. You will not want to miss this month’s CASI Bingo day at the Senior Center. Someone will walk away with $1000. Let the Tibetan Monks teach you inner-peace at the Brewery Arts Center. Two workshops today are offered as part of the Sacred Arts of Tibet Tour.

This beautiful weather is no April Fool’s joke, so get out and enjoy the sunshine. Ascent Runs begins their half marathon series today with a race through Carson Canyons, and it is sure to get your heart pumping. The Downtown Business Association wants to see you at today’s wine walk. Once you’re around Telegraph Street, you’ll see some throwbacks from a by-gone era courtesy of Naughty Tea Mistresses, the First Nevada Cavalry, and more.
