Column: Divorce planning thoughts

It is clear, getting divorced can be a time to consider some financial matters. If the house is sold before the divorce, the full $500,000 home sale gain exclusion rules can apply. Some folks are well advised to sell the home and both parties get new housing.

That can help reduce costs of insurance, property taxes and interest if there is a mortgage. Now that real estate prices are moving up again, you might be better off to sell the house.

BSA Troop 33 is excited to announce it will be hosting its 2nd Annual “Send a Scout to Camp” Car and Truck Show Fundraiser on August 15, 2015 at Carson City’s Fuji Park.

The Show will be from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.; award ceremony starts at 3 p.m. Registration is $40 per entry. There is still time for pre-registration or you can register on the day of the event. Each participant will receive a T-shirt, one lunch meal ticket, and a dash plaque.

Ginger Easley Earns RE/MAX Hall of Fame Award

Ginger Easley, with RE/MAX Realty Affiliates (RRA), was recently presented with the RE/MAX Hall of Fame Award, which honors successful agents who have earned more than $1 million in commissions during their careers with the company. Column: Not all canceled debt is taxable income

A few folks have experienced having debt cancelled. The question is whether or not that cancellation of debt is taxable income.

The report, which tracked all transactions through 2014, concluded that the Lake Tahoe-based agency had $939,547,242 in residential sales volume last year, making it the top producing agency in the region, and number 183 in the nation overall. The figure was an increase from 2013, which saw a volume of $865,000,000.

Column: Determining what records to save

With computers we now have more paper, reports, notes, memos and the like than ever before. The question is what to save and what to destroy (not throw away if it has your personal information on it). First, we urge all income tax returns be saved. If you filed a form 709, U.S. Gift Tax Return, that should be saved with your estate planning documents.

Tahoe Home Featured on May 27 HGTV House Hunters program

Fans of HGTV’s House Hunters may see some familiar scenery on the May 27 episode, which features a Bay Area couple’s search for the perfect mountain home.

Travis and Morgan Fields of Oakland were working with Chase International’s Angie Clark last spring when they decided to invite the show to follow them on their quest. HGTV producers and a film crew came out to Tahoe to film the couple on their South Lake Tahoe search. The episode, titled“Looking for a Log Cabin Vacation Home in Lake Tahoe” will air Wednesday, May 27 at 7 p.m. It will air again through the weekend.

Farmers Bank Open House: Tours set for May 12 for renovated historic Minden building

Governor Colcord House in Carson City listed in State Register of Historic Places

The Governor Roswell K. Colcord House in Carson City has become the latest addition to the Nevada State Register of Historic Places. The State Register is a list of properties in Nevada that reflect the history and traditions important to Nevadans.

The Colcord House served as the Carson City residence of Governor Roswell K. Colcord from his election to the Governor’s Office in 1890 to his death in 1939. It is located at 700 West Telegraph. The announcement was made Monday by Nevada's State Historic Preservation Office.

Small Business Development Center at UNR celebrates 30 years as a resource for startups

Small businesses in Nevada were a big deal in 2014. The Nevada Small Business Development Center, a statewide resource for business assistance and headquartered in the University of Nevada, Reno’s College of Business, helped open 136 new small businesses in the state last year.

“It’s easy to forget the impact small businesses can have, especially with the growing focus on many big-named businesses in the state,” Sam Males, director of the Nevada SBDC, said. “These smaller businesses created 470 jobs and $18 million in new financing, clearly making a marked impact.”
