Successful abalone checkpoints along California’s north coast

The California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) conducted two abalone checkpoints on California’s north coast on June 16 and 17.

Both checkpoints were slower than usual due to rough ocean conditions.

One checkpoint in Navarro, Mendocino County, was conducted by 21 game wardens and one State Parks ranger. Members of the Mendocino Abalone Watch Group assisted with game bag checks and directing traffic.

Forest Service prescribed fire in Markleeville

As part of the Carson Ranger District Hazardous Fuels Reduction Project, U.S. Forest Service fire crews will begin prescribed fire burning operations near Pleasant Valley Road, Hot Springs Road, and Grover’s Hot Spring State Park in the Markleeville area, located in Alpine County Calif., beginning around April 21, through May 21, weather and fuel conditions permitting.

Prospectus issued for campground concessions

The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest issued a prospectus on April 1, 2011, for two campgrounds’ concession operations that will begin January 1, 2012.  The prospectus solicits proposals to operate and maintain campgrounds and day-use areas under a special use permit.

The operator is responsible for all operations and maintenance of facilities in the permit.  Fees collected from users accrue to the concessionaire, with a percentage returned to the government as a permit fee.

UPDATE 4:50PM: Carson City woman killed in accident on Highway 50 east of Dayton

A 21-year-old Carson City woman died this morning in a vehicle accident 10 miles east of Dayton on HIghway 50.

The Nevada Highway Patrol reports that at 6:48 a.m., troopers were dispatched to the collision that involved a blue Honda two-door passenger vehicle and a red Ford Ranger pickup truck, said Trooper Michael Edgell. Alcohol may have played a factor in the accident, he said.

Police chase leads to accident; Carson City patrol car hit in pursuit

A car chase tonight through north and west Carson City caused a two-vehicle accident at Mountain and Winnie streets with a deputy being injured after being rammed by the suspect's vehicle.

The chase involved a red Ford Ranger that wouldn't stop for a patrol officer who has apparently suffered injuries to his hands, knee and shoulder after the suspect reportedly rammed into the patrol car head-on, reports Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

'True Grit' remake is a memorable film of determination

"True Grit" is a 2010 remake to the 1969 film which starred John Wayne, written and directed by the Jeff and Ethan Coen. It is the second adaptation of Charles Portis' 1968 novel of the same name. The film stars Jeff Bridges as U.S. Marshal Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn and Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie Ross with Texas Rager Matt Damon and bad guy Josh Brolin.

Carson City authorities make meth-related arrests

Carson City authorities made three separate methamphetamine-related arrests earlier this week.

A 57-year-old South Lake Tahoe man faces a felony charge of possession of methamphetamine after being stopped on Wednesday at the corner of Carson Street and Hot Springs Road.

Officers spotted a Ford Ranger not driving in the travel lane and not having a red tail light. The driver, identified as Frederick Allan Russo, was stopped. Officers detected a smell of marijuana from his car and officers asked permission to search the vehicle and Russo agreed, according to the arrest report.

Capital Ford and Carson City community set to raise as much as $6,000 for Carson High School

Ford Motor Company and Capital Ford in Carson City are partnering to help raise money in support of Carson High School as part of Ford’s Drive One 4 UR School program.

Members of the local Carson City community will have the opportunity to raise up to $6,000 for Carson High School by test driving a Ford vehicle at Carson High School on October 2 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Carson City BLM office: Statewide public land fire restrictions begin July 16

With hot weather, dry lightening and drought conditions arriving this summer, conditions for explosive brush and forest fires across the Silver State has increased. Because of this, the Bureau of Land Management Carson City District Office has announced plans to begin statewide fire restrictions on public lands beginning Friday, July 16.
