Veterans residing in the state of Nevada should know they are eligible for either a discount on their property tax or vehicle registration. Simply visit your county Tax Assesor office and present a copy of your DD214 and ask to sign up for this program. The former Marine in line in front of me at the DMV was unaware of the program and I want to get the word out there.

Nevada veterans in Clark County can now claim their annual property tax exemption when renewing their vehicle registration online or at one of the Department of Motor Vehicles’ self-service kiosks....

County assessors would no longer be required to publish annual property tax rolls in the local newspaper under a Nevada legislative proposal that would save taxpayers statewide hundreds of thousands of dollars at the expense of newspapers....

Local government officials said while they’ve weathered the economic downturn by cutting budgets and services, they don’t expect their biggest revenue source to return to peak performance for a decade or two....

The improving economy is fueling an increase in sales tax revenues. That, combined with ongoing business expansions in Carson City, had allowed the Board of Supervisors to lower the property tax rate. We lowered the property tax rate by $.02/$100 of assessed value in 2014. Doesn’t sound like much, and some criticized it as a political ploy, but in reality we can only lower it in small increments or we jeopardize placing too large a deficit in the General Fund budget.

Ballot Question 1, creating a Court of Appeals

The problem is that the Nevada Supreme Court is overwhelmed by appeals. But the proposed fix, detailed in Senate Bill 463 (2013), does not address the fact that the Court has no authority to decide which cases it will hear. Instead, Nevada must be just like everybody else, a “government of, by and for lawyers.”

Both problems have a simple, quintessentially conservative solution, proposed by Gary Schmidt, recently a candidate for State Senator from district 16 -- Tort Reform:

A Better Plan for Carson City

Now is the time for courage in leadership as we seek to secure financing and determine the timing of projects through a cooperative effort which will bring together the community, city staff and elected officials.

Karen Abowd on Tuesday announced her second run as Carson City Supervisor Ward I, citing her desire to see through many projects currently in process, as well as her commitment to the future of Nevada’s Capital City.

“Carson City has gone through some tough economic times and continues to,” Abowd said. “We have needed to be careful in our planning and how we spend available dollars in order to create sustainable, relevant opportunities that have immediate positive impacts, and build a future we can be proud to leave our children and grandchildren.”
