Outdoors with Don Q: Be fire smart and create a fire-safe zone
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Thu, 06/19/2014 - 7:53amLast week, I wrote about the strong possibility of poor fishing this summer due to our prolonged drought period.
In addition to the possibility of poor fishing, be aware of the ever-increasing, serious fire danger surrounding us because of our current long daylight hours, hot weather, gusty afternoon winds, low humidity, bone-dry vegetation and dumb acts by humans. Not a good combination.

Nevada peace officers association president opposes legislation for bigger trucks
Submitted by editor on Fri, 05/30/2014 - 10:05amAs president of the Peace Officers Association of Nevada, I speak on behalf of 36 Nevada law enforcement associations and more than 1,500 law enforcement officers and members — and none of my members wants additional semi-trailer truck configurations unleashed onto Nevada highways.
Unfortunately, though, legislation in Congress is currently being debated that would allow heavier trucks in three states. Not only would this bill run counter to the position held by the Nevada law enforcement community that bigger trucks threaten highway safety, it would fly in the face of common sense.

Irish History and Humor for St. Patrick's Day
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Sat, 03/15/2014 - 9:41pmHere's a wee bit o' Irish history in honor of St. Patrick's Day, brought to you by the Gairin Celtic Musicians Tom and Mary Kay Aufrance. When did St. Patrick live?
There is a popular notion that St. Patrick, the Apostle of Ireland, was born sometime in the 4th or 5th Century at Kilpatrick, near Dumbarton. But now! Think about that! The village of Kilpatrick is on the River Clyde, which is in Scotland! If this is his true birthplace, then Ireland's patron saint would actually be Scottish! Begorrah!
